Be prepared to be on hold for months, I suspect, they are swapped with work, one of our friends missed the whole racing deal in 2004 waiting on a Buick 455 crank! R

Are you sure they didn't tell you 10 months ???? I don't know anybody in the history of dealing with that company, that got ANYTHING done in 10 weeks for a Buick. We are talking Buick cranks right?

I don't have any previous experience with Moldex, this is the first time I ordered from them, so I don't know what the typical delivery times are.

It is a 455 Oldsmobile crankshaft. 4.25" stroke, 3" mains, 2.1" SBC rod journal diameter, with a 1.88" Olds rod journal width.

The crank, knife edged, drilled, and balanced (I sent them my bob weight numbers) will be approximately $2400 delivered. They asked for a $250 deposit.

I'm not in a tremendous hurry since I still have other work to do on the car. But it would be nice to get the motor on the dyno and have it tuned before I bolt it into the car. If interested, use the link in my signature to see my project.

    Thanks

When I ordered my 4.500 Buick crank, they told me 10 weeks... so, after 21 weeks I had to fly up there and WAIT until they finished it. Liar's extrordinaire in my book. I'll never deal with them again on anything. Maybe being an Olds your gonna get lucky. Keep us informed.

Unfortunately, with niche brands like ours, our options are limited. Moldex was the only company I could find who would deal directly with me without having to go through a vendor.

I had planned to wait with my engine combo until the crank arrived. But after hearing how long it took you guys to get your cranks, I think I'll just back the cam and compression down with my existing short block so the power level is low enough that I won't have to worry about putting the crank on the ground. And then start a new short block to use the better components.

    Hey guys,
I understand what you are saying about crankshaft manufacturers but this is kind of a common issue with manufacturers of this type of item. Yes its true that the Buick/Olds pieces are not as commonly ordered but some of the specialty stuff that I order for my chevy based race car engine can take just as long in some cases.
The foundry business in the States is in real trouble and some companies are struggling to get product out the door. Cheaper Chinese and Japanese steel has put some domestic makers fighting for thier lives.
In addition in there is the politics factor.
To give you an example,I just ordered a new 6 inch diameter 3 disc clutch for my race car.I was told it would be 4 weeks. I was also told I was in the same lot with Greg Anderson ,Warren Johnson, and like 5 other top teams.

Whos do you think will ship first?

Anyway, Molodex, which is a minor player in racing right now, by the way, might be grinding for other manufacturers or just simply have poor project planning.
My point is that this stuff is common. If you want to go fast sometimes you have to wait for specialty parts. If you want something different that Molodex has to retool for ,you're going to wait longer.
I wish you luck and hope you get out there this summer.

They may be hardened in some way, but I'm positive that if mine was nitrided it would've been on the bill. I doubt it's Modex' S.O.P. to nitride them automatically, although for the price they charge, it should be. I got mine from Mike. Maybe he can shed some light on this if he reads it. Regarding chroming, Scotty is going to have mine chromed now after he sends it out to get welded. It's a little scraped up right now.

Aftermarket billet cranks are hardened in some way, what a bitch to machine for balance. I don't think they actually nitride them but some other hardening process. Hard chrome is different than nitriding, the chrome actually builds up on the surface where nitride is a surface treatment that penetrates the surface a few thousandths deep. Nitrided cranks will not peel or fall off, hard chrome can detach, I would not personally use hard chrome on a high horsepower or high RPM combination but that is only opinion.

I have a new Moldex 4.5 inch arm that I'm thinking of selling along with a nice set of pistons & rings that would make you 540 inches.Oh don't forget the stage 4 heads.I'm thinking of selling the stuff again. The new block isn't moving fast enough for me and I just bought a loaded stage 1 car and my wife is making me feel a little bit guilty for building the new TE stage2 headed 494 and buying the stage car. There will also be a load of speed parts going up forsale in 2-3 weeks, Stage 2 se's,stage 3's,intakes, mallory etc.....Chris
