Gears, a converter matched to the engine, the right cfm carb, enough rubber and a set of good heads with large valves should help you out. Check the Bench for a thread on a '70 GS convertible that runs very high 11's:TU:

let me tell you guys what my plan is and you can let me know if this will run high 12s. i am going to take a 74 455 w/ 64,000mi put a ta cam i think its 276in 285ex duration 460 or 470 lift, not sure of the exact specs i'm not home. edlebrock intake, headers, 800cfm QJ, 3.42 posi, and possibly 2500 stall converter. 2 1/2 exhaust. 28" tall tire. will this be enough? if not what should be changed? any recommendations on torque converter? if not 12s what do you think this combonation wil run.
    thanks
    dave

Sounds like you will be sorry... You have NO comp, good flowing heads, and the cam is Horrid... If your looking for a car to whip on 14 sec mustangs youll be alright. What is the problem???

whats wrong with the cam? i'm new to buicks and just trying to get an idea of how to make this thing run strong. this is adverised duration not @.050 numbers. iv'e run cams this size in small bock chevys and run low 13 sec quaters.

chris, what do you mean whats the problem? what combo would you run to get in the 12s

    here is mine

Dave i have a 71GS 455 weighing in at 3800lbs. that ran 12.68 @104 with LOW compression. (8.6) Nothing hard about it. My combination: A 1972 replacement block untouched, lunati sp-2x cam ( nothing special .501 lift & duration 230-240- @ .050. BONE STOCK NO CLEAN-UP stage 1 heads, had to mill .060 off to maintain 8.5 compression because pistons are .070 in the hole! q-jet, Stinger ignition, 3.73 gears, Mickey thompson headers with 3'' exhaust, Edlebrock b-4b untouched, 9''torque converter from Earick Racing. The best i ran before switching the converter was 13.0's - @ 100mph. This car will run 12.70-12.80 all day on 89 octane fuel& street tires & 1.70 60'. Dave it can be done, but you have to really make sure the parts combination is matched up well. Randy

Ain't that SP-2X cam an awesome little cam? My throttle response is fantastic with that thing. I think it's the 110* LC (106* Intake center)....:TU:

Al, it sure is a nice little cam. Gary Paine built this little budget engine in 1991 for me & it runs as well now as it did when built. Randy

I'm running that cam now with crane high intensity lifters, best et so far was 13.5 (lots of wheel spin). Not that it's a bad cam but it doesn't seem to pull as hard as the poston gs113 cam I previously had all other factors being equal. Any comments, engine has 10.1 pistons.
