Michigan insurance and licensing fees

I just got my renewal for the collector insurance on my 66 and 68 and there was a neat flyer attached that saved me about half. A coupla years ago, they added a $80/car surcharge to all cars that are insured in Michigan (probably to pay for the ones that aren't in the ghettoes) and the collector car people flipped out. Lots of these aren't even licensed (my 66 wasn't) as they're never driven, but are insured. I've been paying this surcharge on the 68 for 3 or 4 years

Turns out if you register your car with collector plates (historical or same year) you get a waiver on this $80/year surcharge (another word for tax). Historical plates cost $30 for 10 years, but using original year plates are $35 and are lifetime plates and don't need renewal.

Doing the complex math, turns out it's a whole bunch cheaper to go buy NOS unissued plates and register the car with those than not register it at all.

This doesn't apply to regular plates so if you don't have Michigan Collector or original year plates, you still get socked for the $80 surcharge. This applies to cars over 25 years old.

Our petitions must have paid off! :TU:

BTW, wait until you see the new trailer renewal charges for licensing. I heard October was the effective date. Anyone experience that yet?

It looks bad, but from what I hear, the trailer registrations can be up to $300, but they are good for as long as you own the trailer.

So basically, some guys here will be paying $300 every six months for their trailers :Dou:

Tim, you ain't seen nuttin yet!

Wait until the new programs that the Guv and her soul mate, Mayor of Detroit brew up start dipping way deep into your pockets. They're "annexing" Macomb, Oakland, and Wastenaw counties already to pay for Detroit. Outstate is next.

Just so long as they don't garnish my wages. Company headquarters in Southfield would make something like that almost plausible.

I think you're safe out there

Usually you're OK when you're on a "remote" assignment like yours, Rusty. Biggest worry would be for you to take on a few more plants to cover so they can get rid of some other people.

Ford dodged the bullet today again, but it sure is getting shaky. One step away from junk bond status.
