LS1 LT1 LS2 and T56s

My question is are all LS1/LT1/LS2 and all those other chevy motors the same bolt pattern on the bellhousing? Is the input shaft on the transmission the same for the different chevy T56s?

Like say, a T56 from a 96 Z78 and a 2003 Z06 Vette. Are the transmissions the same? I know the gear ratios and other things might be different but are the input shafts and bolt patterns the same?

LT1 is the same as the older small blocks LS series are different.

Ok, so you could not bolt a LS1 tranny to a Lt1?

I beleive LS and LT have the same "bolt pattern" but the input shaft lengths are different.

The transmission housing length is also different, and the clutches and throwout bearings are different.

LT -> Pull style clutch (with regular throwout bearing)
LS -> Push style clutch (Hydraulic throwout beairng)
I beleive the GTO trans are also a different entity than the LS1 series.
Early corvettes had a ZF6, they were a complete different entity from the above 3 as well, and an inferior design, that was later improved for the F-bodies.
Later corvettes received the Z56 which is a trans axle.
Viper trans have different bolt patterns also, but they are difficult to adap to chevy.

Also depending on where you get the trans, the F-body versions will have a place for a torque arm, but the GTO ones wont for example.

I could go on and on about the differences and similarities. Would be just easier to ask what youre trying to mate with what.......:TU:

Well, I'm trying to mate a T56 to my 5.7 hemi. These guys make a bellhousing that fits an LS1 T56 along with a few other T56s. I figured the LS1 T56 would be the easiest to find. These stock automatic transmissions are absolutely awful. I can't stand it

It's not a Buick but I knew there were some LS/LT knowledgeable guys on here.

    Thanks for the help guys.

I think it's McLeod that makes what amounts to a universal housing/scatter shield that will allow most any manual trans to adapt to most any engine. If I remember correctly, it consists of a bell housing with the back side open, an appropriate number/selection of spacers that sandwich between the bell housing and the transmission mount face, and that transmission mount face. I may be wrong on the manufacturer but I recall at least one article on this piece when they were introduced about four years ago. The article was in one of the car mags like either Hot Rod or Car Craft.

A little hunting could give you a bolt in solution to your swap.

Thanks for the info. Right now sounds like the LS1 to hemi bellhousing is the best way to go. Then I can get a T56 out of a Z28 or something. I'll have to call that bellhousing company and see what to do about flywheel and pressure plate but I assume I could make a hydraulic clutch set up out of a 2500 6 speed or a 4.7 5 speed.
