Have a look at the lower control arm from my 71 big block rag top car. This happened late in the summer while out on a evening cruise. Fortunately I wasn't on the throttle hard when it let go. I heard a snap the week before while going around a corner but couldn't feel if anything was wrong after that. I looked underneath the car and didn't notice the lower conrtol arm half torn off. The rear of the car walked out about two feet and the tire rubbed on the rear of the wheel well. This is exactly how the 2 pieces came out of the car. I was able to limp home. Marcel.

:eek2: Ouch!! Lucky you weren't hurt! This make s agood case for checking over the car for cracks or stress risers every year or so...

I had that happen on a front lower control arm in the GSX. Luckily I was only backing up in a convienience store parking lot.

wow.. after doing an analisys of that part on the computer... it didnt show that type of failure...

btw... boxing the part (welding a plate) sugnificantly lowers the stresses in the arm.

    edit:

wow... that is a boxed one...
