Low voltage at idle (350-4V)

    Hello folks,

My kid replaced his alternator with the biggest "G-Body" alternator he could get at the local parts place. I think its a 105A designed for an SS Monty Carlo. Car is a 1984 Regal Limited with a 1970 Buick 350-4V.

Voltage is a woefully low 10ish until RPMs are increased to 1500+ and we have to jump the car often (new battery)

Is this as simple as getting an under drive pulley for the new alternator? (assuming one can be had)

Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Sean

    alec296 i need another buick

is it 14 volts or more at 1500?
    is the wiring connected wrong?
if not take alternater back ,have it tested sounds like junk

An "under drive" pulley drives the alternator SLOWER than the correct small diameter pulley, and that means less charging at all rpms.

Is this new alternator the same size basically as the old 1984 one, or is it smaller?

on those once its on,it should run no lower than high 12,s ,depending on the load.sounds like a bad one.check belt slippage first.stock pulleys run 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 diameter.so if those two things check out, pull it off & have it tested.you are running it with the 2 prong plug-in arent you?

The diameter of the crankshaft pulley should be at least 6" in diameter. If it is smaller than that, you can run into a situation like this. Make sure you have at least a #8 gauge charge wire running from the Alt. to the Bat.

i ran into this one time, i think there is a fuse in the panel marked chg..... also if the low charge bulb in the dash is blown it causes a no/low charge issue.and one of my ol' regals last owner left the neg wire to the body off, caused strange electrical issues.even burnt up a shift cable!

Hmmmm, I'm running an all autometer dash, no lights anymore.
    Could this be it?

    Thanks,

yes, sounds like you eliminated the ignition turn on wire that goes to the regulator thru the light circuit.i will ask again...how is it hooked up on the plug?
