i compared a rebuilt m/c to a new one and difference was as plain as day- a lot of noticable surface wear.
the only true way to check would be to remove the piston in the m/c & check for wear in the sleeve, expecially a small trough at the botton of the sleeve. that is where the wear mostly occurs from the contamination that settles.

I have used a rebuilt Cardone MC and it is FINE! Here's the catch, DO NOT buy from the chain parts stores (Autozone, Advance,...). Go to your local mom and pop store and ask the old guy behind the counter which MC he sells. I guarantee they will be different from the chain store crap. The parts store I get my stuff, mostly works on cars so they always willing to share their own experiences. One of which being, that they have never had a problem with rebuilt MC.

Another detail I was shown, I believe, I may be incorrect, but the American cardone reman facility marks their MCs with a tiny ink stamp on the side, and it is impossible to get off.
