I was just curious how they were for the other Buick models. The Skyhawk seems to have WH2 and DX4. I think the WH2 is for the package and maybe DX4 has something to do with the side decal. Any info is appreciated. Brian
DX4 shows as "Tape- accent stripe". WH2 shows as " Free Spirit Skyhawk- Design 2". Data from my Cdn. GM Buick A-Body Master Parts Book, published in '81. I've seen minor differences in trim codes/colour names vs. the US version.
Steve I don't know what to make of the info I have found. It seems the codes cross over from different models I was wondering if a Free Spirit Century had both codes or whatever. I know an owner of a 77 NightHawk that just has the DX5 code on his restoration pack from GM Canada. I'm hoping to find more info. Thanks for the reply I had seen the Design II and wondered if it was 11 or 2. Check these out. Brian
My book covers only Special, Apollo & Skylark- 1964-1976. Can't help with '77 & later. DX5 not there. The DX4 for '76 also listed as the "Free Spirit" application. This option includes 13 separate decals for the car. These GM books can be a little confusing at times as they are listing "replacement" parts which may/may not be identical to the originals.
Is there a site for these cars? They've always been under the radar when it comes to enthusiasm for '70s collectibles, and I don't know why.
DX5 = Stripes, Body Side, "NightHawk", used from 1976-81 before changing applications. DX4 = "Free Spirit", same thing 1976-81. You can find a GM RPO list covering 1976-91 on atlantabuick.com Brian, send me an email address if I find my info I'll scan and send it.
Thanks everyone for the help! David you have mail. Diego its a friends site and he has pictures of the Buick H bodies but that is it. http://monza.homestead.com/clones.html Brian
H-BODY.ORG That should cover you. Also, go to any major city public library that has Hollander Interchange Manuals (reference section; 628 by dewey decimal system) to get most gm rpo codes. Pay special attention to the first page under the GM listing; will help out a lot. Look under service parts identification plate decoding at very start of book. It's only about 30 pages of codes, and the wording may not exactly jive always. (example : RPO T83 is used 76-93 is for concealed headlamps; when used on 84-87 Regals (GN&T-TYPE), it was for the blacken out headlamp bezels, which is part of RPO W02 (blackout trim). but RPO W02 is listed as woodgrain applique for 76-81, nothing listed for 84-87. WE2 is listed as Grand national 86-87, but leaves out 84-85. WE2 again 88-90 is T-TYPE. are YOU conFUseD yet?!?o No:
Hollander crosses DX4 as 76-81 free spirit WH2 as 76-81 Skyhawk Free Spirit, design ll (or 11, or II, as may be 2)
Brian, thanks for the link. I think many of these special-ed packages are interesting, and it's very important for people to collect these cars. With all the complaints about expensive muscle, these cars are a great example of what may be the next best thing. While they may never be worth a lot, history must be preserved.
