The linkage for the primary on my q-jet fell off!!! I noticed it today while installing gauges. It was in the small cavity on the passenger side of the carb. I need to know how it hooks up. If you experts can walk me through it or link me to a diagram, I would be grateful. Again it's the linkage that controls the primary flapper on the passenges side of the carb (not real sure of the correct terminology ). It's on my '71 350.
    Thanks, Mark:rolleyes:

I'm gonna take a guess and assume you're talking about the Choke? It attatches to the air valve via a screw and just "hooks" to a linkage arm in the hole on the passenger side of the carb. first, place a rag or something in the carb to prevent anything from falling into it and possibly the engine., then remove the flat head screw and linkage from the air valve. next get a good flasklight and look into the hole in the carb, it's kinda triangularish :) . You will see the thin side of a flat piece of metal, take the linkage and fish it around until you hook it. then carefully replace the linkage screw and tighten. this should get you back in action. let me know if this helps.

My question is how this became dislodged. If it was loose, did you lose some of the hardware, requiring a junkyard trip? This linkage, as pointed out by Bud, consists of three pieces; 1. the link, connecting the thermostat to the blade, the lever, which is screwed to the blade, and the screw. The lever requires that the link be connected first, then screwed to the blade. If necessary to go to a wrecking yard, either carefully analyze the hook up, if necessary, taking pictures, or simply purchase the carb, allowing a myriad of spare parts no longer available anywhere else. Thanks for the reply guys. I'll have more time today to take a closer look. This helps.

    Ray,
I think he's talking about the internal choke blade linkage. You know that little link that goes from the choke blades to the small lever, located in that equally small well. The one that gives us all fits:laugh:  , because you can't see what your doing to get the link into the hole in the lever. The lever that's located in the well.

    Larry,

I understood the question, but I am still unsure of why it came apart. This link is intended to use the venturi chamber wall to prevent disassembly. If the linkage stayed screwed to the choke blade link, it is impossible for the link to become lost. It would simply drop into the chamber. If part of this set-up was lost, it appears that some small parts would be missing. In order to reassemble the linkage properly, it will require all of the hardware, or the problem will recur. You are correct. This is a bear to set-up. As difficuly as it is to simply disconnect. I suspect that, with your picture, Red71 might better understand the set up, and maybe he is not missing anything. He just needs to be sure it is properly connected. I appreciate the picture. It was my next move for Red.

Again, Thanks for the help Ray & Larry. The pic really helps me "see" it better and this is the piece I'm talking about. It doesn't have any screw to attach to the choke blades though. I can look down the triangular hole on the side of the carb and see the thin bladed link as mentioned. I'm assuming one end of the linkage attaches in the hole on that piece and the other end attaches to the choke blade. What keeps it from coming out again? How can I snap a pic of it and post it?? I'll try to do it as soon as I can, but my real job is keeping me busy this week :).

    Red,
The rod that goes into the choke blade up top, usually is retained with a "C" clip or spring clip. They come in carb rebuild kits, or you can get them in the HELP section in your favorite auto parts store. Good luck with getting the rod in that lower link, it can be a pain. A friend with a penlight can help.

I just fixed a friends Quad for his 71 GS Stage One. The rod for the choke can be put in by pointing the L on the bottom toward the back of the carb and rotating it into the hole by turning it with your fingers. The hole is in that "blade" you see in the well toward the Secondary side. If the spring tension on your choke coil is right that blade will point up and you can see the hole in the end. The end that hooks into the choke blade at the top has a "A" shaped spring clip to hold it in there. The linkage on the end of the choke blade is held on by a screw into the choke shaft.
    Good luck............Rich
