I have a big leak in thet front. can it be the pinion oil seal ? if so how hard is to take out the old and install the new pinion seal? The seal is the same for all axle ? thanks
That's a pinion seal. They are all different sizes for different cars. I've changed a lot of those over the years, they're not too hard to do. First you have to take out the driveshaft, then remove that large nut. You may need a puller to get the pinion flange off the shaft. Once that's off, then you just pry the seal out with a long screwdriver, being careful not to nick the surface of the pinion shaft. And put a pan under there b/c when the seal comes out some fluid will too. You want to put the new one in before it all drains out, unless you want to change the fluid anyway. It should hold about 2 quarts. The trick is in tightening things back up when you're done. There's a crushable sleeve behind the bearing, so you have to be careful not to tighten the nut too tight or you'll crush it too far and the bearing will be too tight. I used to tighten them with the wheels off the ground until the play was gone from the bearing and then just a little bit extra. If you go too far you will have to replace the sleeve. It takes a good amount of force to crush it though. :bglasses:
ok thanks and where do you think I can find a seal for my car I have a riviera 72 with a 12 bolt posi ?
I've always had good luck with NAPA on parts like you need. Also, you have posi, so if you change your fluid you will need to add a bottle of limited slip additive to the new fluid. :bglasses:
It should look similar to that......they should be able to find the correct part number by application.
pinion seal It is best to let the fluid drain out. You should put silicon sealent around the outside diameter of the press fit. to prevent the fluid from leaking there too. Some times there are imperfects from people removing the seal with screw drivers. Nicks and such. And make sure you grease the seal and yoke mating surface well to prevent rubber seal fatigue from heat friction. that is how alot of failure happens ...they burn the seal up in a few miles before the lube get to the area. As far as the crush sleeve is concerned...you will not crush it after reinstall . If you do you are quite a man...a manly man. You can come over here and I will give you the job of tighten and crushing those suckers. You might crush it with a very powerful air gun but never by hand. So just put some lock tight and pull as tight as you can and your done. Good luck on your journey...lol You'll do fine I am sure. Jim
