A02 L2 Tinted Windshield Option - ENTIRE windshield tinted, OR just top 4 inches?

The A02 L2 option for the "Soft-Ray Tinted Windshield" :

Does "tinted" mean the ENTIRE windshield is lightly tinted?

    OR

Does "tinted" mean the top 4 inches are tinted (to block the sun)?

ALSO: Most cars did NOT have this option (correct?)

    THANKS in advance!

I'm thinking this indicates the entire windshield is tinted. I believe mine is tinted and also has the shading across the top.

I think you're right.... I believe all windshields had the 4" sun stripe, regardless of whether or not it is "tinted"

Soft-Ray Tinted glass all round (L1), or Soft-Ray tinted windshields only (L-2) were optional on most cars, and included a heavier shaded band at the top of the tinted windshield glass. :TU:

That would be incorrect. Unless you ordered a tinted windshield, you received a completely clear glass, top to bottom, side to side. The optional tinted windshield had an area at the top that was shaded and not just tinted. You could also order all tinted glass that included the above mentioned tinted and shaded windshield as well as tinted side and rear glass.

    Brad -

How sure are you? Did you look at the eBay links above? My windshield is completely clear (not lightly blue tinted) & it has the upper 4" shaded...

    I've never seen a windshield w/o the upper 4" shaded.

From all the production #s I see online (for Chevys), not many cars had just tinted windshields...

Example: '72 Electra 96% of them had L1 (all windows tinted - including windshield); only 3% had L2 (just windshield tinted)

My side glass is clear, which leads me to believe that "tinted" means the glass had a slight blue tint, in addition to the 4" sun shading (which I thought all winnshields had)

ALSO: I found this from a Centurion Forum:

"Actually, your entire windshield is tinted but there is always a darker tinted band at the top. "

    Here are a few statistics:
    1968 43% of all GS's had tinted windshield (L2)
    1968 41% had tinted glass (L1)
That means 84% of all GS's had a tinted windshield since a tinted windshield was included with L1 tinted glass. (L1 + L2)

    1969 37% had tinted windshield (L2)
    1969 52% had tinted glass (L1)
    89% had tinted windshields (L1 + L2)

    1970 30% had tinted windshields (L2)
    1970 59% had tinted glass (L1)
    89% had tinted windshields (L1 + L2)

    1971 26% had tinted windshields (L2)
    1971 63% had tinted glass (L2)
    89% had tinted windshields (L1 + L2)

    1972 21% had tinted windshields (L2)
    1972 69% had tinted glass (L1)
    90% had tinted windshields (L1 + L2)

Weird how almost every year had 89% tinted windshields...

    Ok - I know I don;t have tinted side glass (L1)

So using your numbers, let's take 1968 as an example:

Let's say that I own a '68 GS W/O tinted side glass...Since only 43% of cars had just L2, that means 57% of the cars W/O side tinted windows had non-tinted windshields...The greater percentage...

But the question still remains: Did ALL windshields (tinted or not) have the 4" sun shading?

Just to clarify my above post:

True, approx. 80% of those cars had some form of tinted windshields/windows, but of those that did NOT have tinted SIDE windows (i.e those that had clear side windows), the greater percentage of those cars ALSO did NOT have tinted windshields...

However, the question still remains: Did ALL windshields (tinted or not) have the 4" sun shading?

I have a 1964 Electra without any shading at the top. It's been in my family since new (I helped my grandma order it at age 5). It has a clear windshield and has never been changed. I am positive of my answer.

    L2 was tinted windshield only
L1 was tinted windshield and tinted side glass.
L2 is not part of the L1 total, they are separate options and totals.
    So..
43% of all 1968 GS's had just a tinted windshield
41% of all 1968 GS's had a tinted windshield and side glass.
That means that 84% of all GS's build in 1968 had a tinted windshield, only 16% did not.

Take the 57% W/O side tinted windows and subtract the 41% that had L1 (tinted windshield and side glass) and that leaves 16%.

    :beers2:

According to NAGS (National Auto Glass) "Tinted" is the whole windshield is tinted a light green or blue or bronze to cut down on UV rays. "Clear" would mean just that. Clear, no tint. "Shaded" refers to the dark blue, green, or bronze 4" strip across the top. A "shaded" windshield is also tinted from the "shaded" band down with a compatible color, that is "bronze tint/bronze shade", "green tint/blue shade" or "blue tint/blue shade."

Windshields would be designated as follows:

    DW848GBN

    DW=Domestic Windshield

    848=Windshield Number (Chevrolet/GMC Pickup/Suburban/Blazer 1988-1973 w/ antenna)

    GB=Green Tint/Blue Shade

N= No (Refering to whether there are attatchments or not)

    Interpretation as follows.

DW848GBN=Domestic Windshield for a 1973-1988 Chevrolet/GMC Pickup/Suburban/Blazer with Green Tint and Blue Shade and no attatchments.

Attatchments refers to Encapsulation (Hard Rubber or Plastic mouldings), Mouldings (Removable or Not installed that comes with the glass when ordered), and Hardware (Note: Hardware does not include mirror bracket. Without a mirror bracket would be another number, such as DW847GBN. A clear version of this windshield would be designated as DW848CLN, for example.)

    Hope this helps.
