K&P Engineering Oil Filters

now there is some brain twisting information :) I like:rolleyes:.

is this figured on a single pass or just as it runs.........if a filter can grab 50% of things down to 6 micron......... .000236 on an inch, and 95% of things at 20 micron....... .000787. that's not too shabby for a 10 dollar throw away...........

the issue is the flow of only 7-9 gpm on a race motor living above 6000 rpm will burn it up for sure.

if k&p numbers are 95% of 35 micron and have a flow rate that equals a wix racing which is only rated near 60 micron.......if we assume the advertise rating on it is in line with 95% rating of the filter mentioned above. that would have k&p filtering down to .00138 and wix racing only down to .00236 that's damn near 100% better in my book

Michael Tomaszewski.....Agreed. That correlates with the ISO requirements for the oil itself. Filter media is filter media, especially the ss mesh. There's only a handful that make it and supply it to filter makers. It comes down to basic math and geometry.
The screen size will be "X" opening no matter who makes it. The "X" opening will be different for the various size of micron ratings. Consistency on the mesh size is critical for a specific rating. That's the reason that the industry has put the tight specs on the oil, because a filter can only do so much "filtering" before loading up and creating excess inlet pressure and greatly reduced outlet pressure/flow.
There really is no "black magic " involved, just basic engineering principles. My real original question was more related to the quality of the filter as a "whole", (machining quality, fit, finish, etc.) and not really questioning their choice of filter media. Mesh size and square inches of surface will determine how it filters and for how long.....depending on the condition of the oil of course.

    Steve,
Did you ever become a dealer for K&P?

  4. Steve Reynolds

    Steve Reynolds SRE Inc

Yes, I am a dealer for them. I try to stock a few Buick oil filters at all times. Currently I have some black and some natural finish.

What's the difference between the S16 and S19? At one point, I used the site to cross over from an AC PF-24, and it said S16. What is the price?

Sorry for the delay, I've been swamped lately.
I do recall "miss quoting" the correct part number sometime in the past and listed S19 as the Buick filter. That was incorrect.
The S16 series of filters are the ones that fit our Buicks.

    These are the options on exterior finishes and pricing;

    S16 Machine finish / List $189 / SRE price $170
    S16A Anodized Black / List $199 / SRE price $180
    S16AG Anodized Grey / List $199 / SRE price $180
S16A BE Anodized Black with buffed edges / List $208 / SRE price $188
    S16C Chrome / List $238 / SRE price $215
    S16P Polished / List $238 / SRE price $215
    S16 P DC Polished & Diamond Cut / List $287 / SRE price $260

I encourage anyone looking to upgrade their filters to read through the information on the K&P website. Technical Information – K and P Engineering

I have an S16 filter I am going to try. Seems quite small. Is there a larger one that would work?
I guess the small one would be fine if I clean it between oil changes on the race cars. Should be a good indicator if anything is hurt. I have 500+ passes on both of my engines so should be interesting to see what shows up in it.

Also, has anyone noticed any change in oil pressure after switching to K&P? I would think it would at least change the high RPM pressure due to the reduced restriction.

I still have it. I need to buy an O ring kit for it, the originals wore out finally and were seeping. I like this K&P filter better. Look how much smaller it is, and how much clearance there is between it and the lower radiator hose. I figure it fills up faster being smaller. Faster oil pressure because of that? I'll see next time I start it cold.

Yes it will, filtering capacity is SLIGHTLY reduced, but I see it as a non issue, being we change oil often, and limited miles we drive.

    Love these filters

One thing to make sure you do when using them, is to put the supplied cup wrench on it, and tighten it up. For years, I screwed on the old paper filters by hand, and snugged them up.. no issues.. I can't recall ever putting a filter wrench on a PF-24 to tighten it.

Tried that with this new filter, and was rewarded with a big mess when it leaked..

use the cup wrench and tighten as specified in the directions, and you will have no issues.

Just did my first oil change since using this filter. Very easy to disassemble and clean. And yes, you need to tighten it sufficiently, I torqued it to 20 ft. lbs. The small size means it fills really fast, oil pressure builds in a couple of seconds.

Did you wipe your oil pump before taking that pic? Mine doesn't leak oil but oil does slowly seep out..always thought it was because of the oil pressure.

I wipe it down every time I change the oil. There is a slight amount of seepage, nothing that would drip, and yes, I had just changed my oil, so I had wiped it down.
