how are u guys doing i bought my 70 buick about a year ago it is a project car i have done alot but i still have alot to do i have been reading up and i see that i had one of the best motors even though it was 2 barrell but that motor was blowed so i swap it with a 1977 350 out of a lesabre how much am i losing by doing that, anyway i am about to get my heads reworked, all new valves (16)put in all new lifters and a high performance intake.so should i see a big difference in horsepower from doing that? i also was wondering if i should get my heads shaved down any. another question i have is when i am driving the car might start to sputter then it will cut off then i will have to wait for a while before it will crank up again it was doing something similair to that before and it was the pickup but i changed that not even a month ago so what else could it be? thank you for listening any truthful answers will be very helpful

    gotbuick What, me worry?

Welcome to the boards! Since we are the minority in the GM line-up we are on a first name basis around here.

Anyway, check out "small block tech" and you'll find most of your answers there. Enjoy!!

Congrats on your Buick! First off, lose the emission contols from that '77 350, unless you absolutely need to have them by law. I personally wouldn't shave the heads, or recommend you do it without knowing exactly what else you're doing to the engine- even them I probably wouldn't recommend doing it, since you could spend that money better elsewhere: like on the ignition. High compression isn't a gaurantee of high power anyway.

If the car is sputtering, then hard to start, I'd check the grounding strap and battery cables (positive cable on my Regal had a worn spot through the insulation, and the car was hard to start and then ran like crap), then I'd check the fuel pump and fuel pressure. Do you smell gas when this happens? You need to determine if it's fuel or spark that's your trouble. What kind of distributor does it have? GM claims the pick-up coil on it's HEI never goes bad, but they fibbed, lol. I suppose this could also be a bad module, if it's HEI. Give all the details you can. If I can make a friendly suggestion, could you use a bit more punctuation? I'm not an English Teacher, but it makes it much easier to read your questions and respond with help, if I can read something besides one 50 word sentence.

    69GS400s ...my own amusement ride!

    Welcome.....

Just because you changed the pickup (and screen i imagine) doesn't mean it cant be fouled again......especially if the car sat for any length of time with gas in the tank.

I've seen "The Nasty's" come out of tanks like that.....even after you flush and flush and flush them.

As far as the motor goes.....More air in+More air out = More POWER !!

A 4-barrel carb and manfiold and a set of headers and 2.5" dual mandrel bent pipes will certainly get you some tire-fry'in results:TU:
