I've never seen such a slow Porsche

OMG! What was Porsche thinking when they created this 944?
At first I thought I had beat the pants off some guy in a 240SX..... until I saw 944 on the back of his car... what the hell?

    1 for the 71 Riviera, 0 for the 944

All I know is I was at a light and decided for the hell of it to peel out and drive fast.. then i noticed in my rear-view this "Nissan" is getting pretty close now.. what the hell is he doing? Is he trying to beat my Riviera??

So I floored it more, now when I did that he was already at my quarter panel, but couldn;'t keep up anyway... but... I figured.. maybe... hell.. maybe he didn't decide to race with me until after i took off... so it happened again at the next light and.... sure enough, he does it again...... so.. I'm thinking.. why is he beating himself up like this? He's 5 car lengths behind me.. (well maybe like 3 riviera lengths) and.. he keeps trying.. wotever.. A for effort. F for torque and F for him just being plain ugly when I finally saw him.

Now the best part was I guess the girls we were trying to impress in this Camry between us.... but ehm... all I saw them doing was pointing at his car and lauhging when the whole ordeal was over..

    lol, silly Porsche owner....... wotever

He seriously could not keep up worth a darn.

another thing tho........ why is it that people, like the guy in the porsche did, after I slow down when I realize "I'm doiing 80 in a 40", they pass u going about 90, thinking they won? meanwhile I'm already back to 50 coz I already smoked him soo far behind me, he thinks he won now because I slowed down at 80?? What gives with these people? lol

Oh, so the bonus after all that came 10 minutes later on a road near my house.. I hear a man talking in a car which is at my quarter panel.. and I hear him say "That's a Riviera, I had one of those.. Ain't nothing faster, and nothing handled better".. that was nice to hear, so I backed up to talk to him about this so-called-not-worthy-of-being-one "Porsche" and thanked him for the compliment.. and came straight here to report it :)

Well I used to have an '85-1/2 944, 2.5 liter 170hp. No they aren't fast from a standstill, but these cars have incredible handling and they can cruise at 120 all day long and not blink. Now a 944 turbo set up right is a wicked ride. On the open road give me a big block but on tight twisty mountain road I'll take the 944 in the turns.

I'm thinking a 944 might be a good platform for a mild 350 swap. What do all you guys think?

They are torque tube. You have to figure a way around that, but it is possible.

  5. I've seen a few 350 swaps into 944's as well as RX7's, 240's, etc. It's all been done!

turbo 6 from a GN would be the sweet set-up. It'd still handle great and run away from the 350.

  7. And would still be a turbo like the original!

If you walk away quickly it then becomes a top speed race.
The race doesn't end. Allot of street racing isn't by 1/4 mile rules.
It usually last until someone lifts. Who ever lifts first loses on the street.
It sort of like a chicken run. If you give up early, then you didn't win.

You gotta race them for as long as they want. They are the challenger and you must defend till they give.
As street racing isn't just about quick runs. [Like drag racing.]
Street racing and drag racing are two different things.
I do more racing already doing 70 then any other speed. When some ricers think the big Buick is slow.
I put it to the floor and hold it there till they disappear or give up.
Thats the only way to win.

Thats my experience with street racing.
There is no finish line. He who lifts loses.

I disagree that you have to do ANYthing until the other person decides you don't have to, James.

As for the Porsche, don't forget that the 944 was an entry level sports car. The 914 isn't so hot off the line either

on the one hand i see your point.

on the other, i (and i'm sure many others) can't afford the felony driving conviction and jail time that would surely result from getting stopped racing at 100+ mph. :blast: (damn this driving for a living thing)

if i got 3-4 lengths on a guy and was pulling i'd call it a win and back off. if he does a ricer flyby and tries to claim he 'won' he can prove it at a drag strip.

if he's just some random schmoe who revved up on me his personal opinion of what happened doesn't mean dink to me anyway.

I understand but that just street racing as I know it.
You must be ready to peg the speedo and blow the guts out the bottom.

The tickets and realizing I just drove down the wrong side of the road at 120 doesn't hit me till after. Once the race get going, its all or nothing.

Its why street racing is dangerous.
And why I try to avoid it at all cost.
As I wont give, I wont lift.

But I do live in BFE with super long country roads with nothing but corn for miles.
Back in the day we would race for hrs. Taking turns in the leading. As once your peged out in a chevette it becomes a draft and pass race.
