I've got a 3:08 in my GS, what would be considered the best all around gear to have?

Of course with gas nearing $5 I should probably leave well enough alone! BTW - It is an automatic.

I think a 3.42 would give your Gs a little more snap without losing any driveability. I have a 3.64 in the 70 and it get a little revvy on the highway. I usually have to keep the RPM's around 3200 (if my factory tach is accurate)to try and keep up with traffic.

There are allot of factors to consider...What kind of driving will you be doing? Highway / cruising to the neighborhood car show? What transmission do you have?

And yes gas prices stink :blast:

Do not forget about tire diameter size too. That will factor into your ratio output. :) Jim

To answer a few of the questions. T350, stock tires so 26" dia, driving, about 500 or so per summer mostly car shows and such with little highway cruising.

I think you are right on the money with the 3.08s. Certainly no more than 3.42 good luck to you. Nice car by the way!:TU:

I would stay with the 3.08 unless your tracking the car more than driving it. You still should have enough power in the 350 to bake the tires. Jim:3gears:

i have a 3.08 in my '72 GS with the 350. running 245r60x15 tires. the engine will smoke the tires. i do not race the car, only drive it to carshows, cruiseins, etc.
    Keep the 3.08 as is.

I just went from a 2.76 to a 3.42 and I'm very pleased with the compromise between mileage, performance, and cruising rpm. I have a 27 inch tire (255/60/15) and I can keep up with highway traffic at 26-2800 rpm, which also makes 3rd gear passing a breeze.

When deciding on a posi rear for my '72 I was considering a 3.08 - eventually found a good deal on a rebuilt 3.23 from Everyday Performance. I have 255x60x15 tires all around. The 3.23 gives the car quick acceleration and is also good on the highway (3,000 RPM at 70 mph). I think that the 3.08 is also a great all around gear ratio - if you have no problems with your posi then I would keep it.

3.23 or 3.08 depending on the tire size. 3.42 is not so highway friendly and for sure 3.64 and up is.

    Jeff,
I have 2.56 open in mine. Yes, call it a Granny cruiser, I do.
Banana Boat to some with the yellow & brown.
I see +/- 2000 RPM on the highway at 60 MPH.

My GS came with 3.08`s from the factory, I swapped for 3.42`s right after I bought the car. Yes, you can feel a torque and rpm increase with the ratio change ( it`s not night and day, but an increase), but for the $$ of the swap and the increase in fuel consumption, I don`t think it would be worth it IMO. If you are paying "full pop" for a new 3.42 ring & pinion and maybe a posi unit, plus bearings, seals ect and most importantly the labour to someone who actually knows how to set up a diff assy..Hell you could reach $800-$1000.
Now this is full price I am talking about here, regardless, you are not going to notice the change as much as swapping a 2.56-2.73 for a 3.42 ratio.
How big is your wallet!! Later,Tony.

I say use the online calculator and gear it to what you tend to drive on the highway..

I geared mine to be just under 3k for 75mph

I didnt take the torque converter slippage into account ..so keep that in mind..

but i know have shorter tires..before it was 28 in tire with 3.08...now i have about a 26in tire..so i'm more true to an actual 3.08..perhaps even made it deeper.thnk stock tire for my car is 27in compared with the old combo which essentially reduced it to a 2.94 ratio

When converting my peg leg 2.56 rear on my 350 Skylark to a posi I too went crazy deciding on the right gear. I settled for the 3.08's to keep my RPM's low on the highway as I like to cruise there as well as around town. If I ever changed it would be to 3.42 but for now all around I am quite content. Don't think changing things would result in a dramatic difference to make the expense worth while! Just my two sense.
