This is what your gear set should look like. You received something close, but different. https://www.performanceparts.com/cloyes_engine_timing_set_c_3083_0?sku=CLOC-3083 And don't pay any attention the the summit photo, they're notorious for using one photo to represent a million different parts. The photo at the link above is what you should be working with. Devon
Nope, it's just that he was thinking he was looking at a part number, when it's simply a grind number used by Crane on several different makes. The giveaway problem-wise is that top gear. Looks nothing like what it should. Devon
The mystery deepens. The gear that's being tried looks nothing like we'd expect. BUT, it's stamped S398T, which everywhere else on the web shows the gear we're used to seeing from Cloyes. Here's what a search for S398T is supposed to look like: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clo-s398t Which is exactly what we'd expect. I'm now wondering if the wrong parts at Cloyes may have been getting stamped with the right (Buick 455) part number! That would explain a lot. Devon
Thanks for information!! I’m just wondering why when I order this timing set kit they all came with this sprocket ? Not the one the seller is advertising
See my comment above, I'm afraid there may have been wrong parts coming out of Cloyes. Either (1) the gear is meant for another engine and not Buick 400-430-455, (2) or they changed the design to look like your new one, but got the holes wrong. I'm thinking (2), because everything else fits ok. Short term solution may be to purchase just the top gear from Summit, linked above, and cross your fingers! Devon
Where are you located? ebay may be another option: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fr...itleDesc=0&_odkw=S398T&_osacat=0&LH_PrefLoc=2
Or just order a know good rollmaster https://www.ebay.com/itm/3139477418...ggW5B/e0XjCxgfLzB1wjf8QQc=|tkp:Bk9SR-7wruChYQ
Yeah, but then you have the whole slotting the fuel pump holes thing. Personally never had to, always electric here. Devon
Guess you pick you fight. Fiddle with fuel pump or keep ordering the same part wondering why it doesn't fit
Do it! My engineering brain is aching. Doesn't matter if they're manufacturing there or just distributing from there. Something's up. Devon
This^^^ Haven't seen if this has been attempted. Cam bolt holes aren't drilled 180* apart...one is drilled offset so that it will only bolt on one way, like flywheel or flexplate. Spin the cam 180 Edit...Nevermind, don't know how I missed the post that you tried this.
I used a Melling 3-498SA timing chain set when I did the one in my 400 9-months ago. No such problems with it.
