Is there a Mini Starter for 66 340 ?

Discussion in 'Buick FAQ' started by Nailhead Rdstr, May 6, 2024.

  1. Hi , I think my starter drive is starting to fail so I was thinking of replacing it with a Mini Starter . I had one in my 401 Nailhead and I could use to pull my Hot Rod in the garage if I needed , as it was so powerful .
This 340 Car is kind of new to me so I’m learning as I go.
If they are available any sources would be great ! , Thanks in Advance .

  4. Thanks , I will keep that in mind for the future when I do an engine swap .

  5. Thanks 12 Lives , I ordered one last night and will have it for the Weekend . I didn’t want to spend too much anyway as I have a Chevy 383 Stroker sitting on a stand with a Muncie 4 Spd. And a Bell housing I think I might put in it at the end of the season . The 340 is nice but there’s not much available for it since it was a two year only motor . I’m thinking of putting A/C in the car also down the road if I have the money. Thanks again ,Bruce

Just so you're aware the 340 engine family has way more years in production than you're giving it. Its based on the iron block 300 that replaced the aluminum block V8 that GM sold to Rover/British Leyland. In various cu. inch variations from 1964 (300) till 1980 (350) It's still a hard engine to find parts for but the 350 is a torque monster compared to a Chevy 350. They also made the 3.8L V6 off that engine block that is the ancestor to the GM 3800 V6 of today.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_V8_engine#:~:text=used this engine.-,340,(5.7 L) in 1968.

Even though it was made for longer than you said you're right it's still one of the hardest engines to find parts for.
Yes there are way less parts available

I don't think the 350 was based on the 340??? Seems everything is different and the 350 was a clean sheet design.

    Arguments/discussion?

Not really. The blocks are identical in architecture. The big change was top end but thats about it.
