Richmond Gears are notoriously noisy if you care. The guy I use to rebuild rears swears by motive Gear. I will use originall GM gears as I know they are quiet. Check with Randy's Ring and Pinion. They sell them all for best prices.

I put a set of Richmond 3.23 gears in a '72 8.5 and installed it in my '69 and I can attest to the fact that Richmond gears have a considerable amount of "whine" to them!

If I do have 2:56 gears, which I haven't been able to determine gear ratio, will I need anything different than what I have and a posi unit?

I've had the gears for almost a year. Just want to make sure I have what I need before I take it to my guy..

You will need a rebuild kit as the rear is 30-40 years old now and those bearings EVEN if low miles need a replacement by now. :)

If you have a 2.56 posi you will need a spacer plate kit to use the 3.73 gears.
OR you will need a 3 series posi.

EVERY>>>>EVERY gear set company will have BAD gear sets. IF you do as many as I do you will get some that will JUST NOT set-up quiet or set -up right at all for that matter.

NOW what makes it really tough is that you the consumer that does not usually set-up gears will not recognize this till you totally frustrated or drive them. They will first assume you set them up wrong. They will not give you the credibility a diff or drive line shop will get. ...That is the bad news. I have set-up Many Richmond gears and they have been quiet.

Richmond does admit they do not consentrate so much on quiet gears and they are strong for racing and extreme situations...??? Oh well. Jim:Dou:

I set mine up with Richmond 3:73 about 8 Years ago. I remember taking it apart during set up several times to get the gear set up as recomenged.
I was very happy that there was no whine when I drove the car.
