Is no one doing any racing any more?

When I first came to this board it was about fifteen threads in this section, now it's down to two. :Do No:

The last race I had was after I had been to the Lancaster race track and I was driving towards the freeway to go home. I come up to this red light on a two lane each way road that is about a mile before you reach the entry point to the freeway; and these two girls pull up next to me in a newish Jetta. I look over and they look over at me, kinda interested. My GF is sitting in the passenger seat, but she's got a hat on so they can't really see her too well, and probably think it's another guy. When we take off it's clear that they want to race, but the Centurion handles it well and we pull away without too much effort. When we reach the next light they look over again, but this time they see my GF and they re-direct their views to what's in front of their windshield. We got a good laugh as we saw their faces..

There used to be a lot of kill stories here, but I think a lot of people quit posting them here since a few people would always shoot their thread down by disbelieving them or saying they are full of bs, or whatever the case may be. The last kill I had was when I raced a V6 5 speed camaro(2000ish looking) right before I acquired a 350 to swap the v6 out for. Figured I was going to put the 350 in anyway, what's a little hard driving going to account for anyways? I can't wait to get the 350 in my car, I am sure once I do, you can expect some kill stories coming from me every so often. :Smarty: :TU:

Do you guy think it might be because it is raining and snowing, a lot of people aren't driving their cars right now? Even here, in SoCal, it is wet a lot and I can't get enough traction to make a tire print.

I think it's been on a low level for a long time, but winter has probably something to do with it too. I also agree on that a lot of people got told that what they considered racing wasn't what other people thought; so they stopped posting after getting hassled for their posts.
There must be tons of old stories floating around about racing this and that; don't we have any good cat & mouse cop stories that haven't been told yet? Anyone chasing another car who did a hit and run or something? Give me some juicy stuff so I grin at the screen for a few mins.. pretty please, with a Buick on top :Brow:

The scariest race I've ever been in was some inner city madness back in '95. I was eighteen and my friend who was driving was nineteen. We were in central Stockholm one night driving around. There's this long straight road that goes for about a mile, and it has many cross walks on it, which also have red lights. We are in my friend's volvo 745 GLT station wagon, and up next to us pulls this Volvo 760 Turbo. These are not particularly fast cars by any means, but can get moving if you step on it for long enough time. We look over and the kids next to us are just as eager as we are to have a go at it. We take off and this is in the middle of the city; there's people everywhere. It's dead even and no one wants to give in, gear after gear goes in and light after light is passed, all green luckily. Still no one is pulling ahead.. When we hit fourth gear we're doing somthing like 85 mph, and the light ahead of us turns red. This is right at a major crossing, right next to Hard Rock cafe. Our car has abs and it stops right on the cross walk, the other car does not and skids right into the intersection just before it turns green for the crossing traffic. My heart was pounding real hard after that one, what a rush. Luckily you grow wiser by age. I'm sure there's people on the board here with alot of these heart rush events from earlier days, let's hear some.

    revival of the kill stories

    Hey gang,
I'm the new guy here. I'm a mopar guy that enjoys this message board because my Buick loving friend got me into it, and because I dont get enough kill stories on moparts.

I wish there were more kill stories too. So, here's mine, with a Buick on the winners side....

Back in 2003, I had finally talked my friend, known as Berigan here on the board, into hitting the drag strip. You see, my friend and his father (whose long list of owned Buicks includes a 40' Buick convertible) look like nice, unassuming, law abiding citizens, but in reality have street-raced eachother.
Very Naughty. Well Berigan finally caved in to my harrassment to find out how really fast his car is, and obey the law at the same time. I told him that I like to check out the Atlanta Dragway on an occasional Friday night and watch all kinds of cars run elapsed time. Now for me, its a quick hop up I-85 to exit 149. Berigan, however, lives more than an hour south of me and its more of a haul.

Nevertheless, I was always prepared for a drag race, as I drive my old cars everyday, and that season I always had either the New Yorker or the Imperial handy. So Berigan calls me on my celly one october Friday afternoon, that he wants to find out what the Buick can do. Well, this is perfect, cause I got my 50,000 mile 72 New Yorker 2 door with me. I'm already leaving the place where I work for the day, which was near Northside Hospital. So I have to make my way about 10 miles on 285 to 85 North for another 55 miles. Bit of a haul for me, too.

I get to the dragstrip and there he is, with his near perfect 1970 Buick Wildcat, a relatively sedate looking car, a white 4 door hardtop with a black vinyl interior. Column shift hydramatic, bench seat, power drum brakes, single exhaust, open rear. Nothing special, right?

I'd heard his Father brag that the car was fast, and thought yeah right. After all, I had a Chrysler New Yorker, with the torque monster of them all, the 440. I had just put a set of fresh Bosch platinum plugs in my 440, and I had a new Edelbrock 600 on it to replace the junky holley 4160 it came with, which everyone knows is good for nothing more than a paperweight. My car had electronic ignition, dual exhaust and an open aircleaner. His car was not prepped at all, just like it was driven on the street. His car weighed about 4200 lbs to my 4500, and he had a 3.08 rear to my 2.71, but these were small diadvantages, right?

Well, we get up to the lanes, and arrange to run side by side. I use a little technique and make a clean launch. I run an adequate, but dissapointing, 17.4 @ 80mph. Berigan's never done this before, and the starting line sucks really because of all the debris that all the other cars have left behind. He smokes his right rear wheel most of the way down the track, and manages 18.0 seconds at 80 mph. I thought I had it in the bag, but I wasnt prepared for run number 2...

We pull up to the staging lanes again, and Berigan's got his act together this time. He's a fast learner. He never makes the same mistake twice. Thats why he's only had one Chrysler product and many big block buicks.

This time, he smokes his tires a lot less, and soon, all I see are tailights....
His second run, with no race prep, yields a respectable 16.1 secs @ 86 mph.
My New Yorker does 17.35 sec @ 79 mph. He blew me away by more than a second.

Thats all he wants to do that night, even though we realize it would be easy to break into the 15's with a little more technique. 15's are quite plausible, considering that the tests from Car Life show the 1969 Caprice 427 and the 1969 Dodge Monaco 440 capable of 15.5's at over 90 Mph. The 300 Hurst, with its fiberglass hood and decklid clicked off a 15.3.

Well, there you have it folks. I was the goat and he was the hero, as Charlie Brown would say. The crowd gathered around him picked him up and cheered, and all the cute girls threw their underwear at him, and I walked away alone in silence, with my head down, covered in eggs and rotten tomatoes....

Next time, My 73 Imperial against his 71 Coupe De Ville.... who wins???

    hit and runs

someone said they wanted to hear about chacing down hit and run drivers eh? both stories are BEFORE i went to bootcamp

these 2 stories occured in my '68 skylark, 350-2bb, powerglide, 2.56 gears, open diff... slug
    [IMG]

first hit and run occurred right next to me at a traffic light when a nissan pathfinder rearended a subaru forester. the pathfinder suddenly took off running a red light, so my 3 freinds and i naturally say "lets get the f**ker!" i'm instantly on my cellphone calling the cops as we scream off of the main road onto a side road near a grocery store. they turn right, running a stopsign. we stop at the stopsigm and continue after them spinning the right rear wheel something terrible. even with all of the wheelspin we catch up easily, they then turn into a residential area, so i'm gett'n super pissed off now with they way that they're driving... flashing my brights and honking my horn the entire time.. i was tailgating them and made it obvious to them that they weren't gunna get away and they finally pull over...

my freinds and i pile out of the car.. Danny tire iron in hand weighed about 230lbs 5ft-11" and a football player, Matt just back from his first tour with the army in Iraq 180lbs 6ft-2", Luis wanting to be a marine and had a black belt in Tae Quon Do 5ft-2" 150lbs, and myself crazed with crowbar in hand (kept it under my seat for "self defense" :TU: ) 150lbs 6ft-3" (yes some people called me the etheopian) on my way to bootcamp the next month... we all run up to the nissan and i rip open the dirver's door, while my buddies rip open the other doors.. only to find that they were highschoolers and the driver was a GIRL... encouraged by her male freinds to run after hitting the subaru :Dou: by then the cop were on their way and her freinds knew it, so they tried to sneak off to a nearby store so their other freinds could pick them up.. Matt an I saw this happening, and we chased the little bastards down and borught them back.. scaring them thououghly for the night.

The second "hit and run" occurred when my freind Danny and i were in escondido, CA for a week.. wew were down there for his cousin's, my best freind's, graduation form bootcamp (KILL!).. this is a couple months before i went to bootcamp (before the previous incident) and this is at near-sealevel as opposed to 6500ft elevation from the previous story. and once again, at night.

so we're cruising around and we see a car (80's honda i think) driving around without it's lights on, very suspiciously... passenger side door bent completely forward :puzzled: so we turn off our lights and start following them (danny is driving this time, mind you) they end up spotting us and take off, running stopsigns and red lights, so we turn our lights back on (they never did turn theirs back on) and follow... then we notice another car pull in front of us, chasing them also... must be the guys they hit right?? well they get stuck behind a car at a light, one of the guys in the other car gets out and opens their other door trying to get the driver out, we start to get out when they notice us behind them, just then the guys being persued drive around the car in front and run the red light, turing left into the oncoming traffics of a very large thuroughfare with a posted speedlimit of 65mph (danny claims that this was part of the old freeway :Do No: )... i yell out "lets get those motherf**kers!" and the guys in the car in front of us (who thought they were gunna have to deal with us now too) of course yell out "yeah!"... so what do we do? danny follows the "f**kers" into oncoming traffic! :Dou: dodging cars, they finally get sense enough to try to get into the correct side of the road so they cross a 20 foot wide grass median into the far left lane going the correct direction, then come to an intersection, and turn right cutting across the vehicles wating for the light... so of course we follow, tearing up the grass as well... the other guys had dissappeared, not willing to be that crazy... on this side street we get up beside them, danny hanging out the window, swinging my crowbar, yelling "pull over motherf**kers!" they screech to a stop and so do we, the squeel in reverse, and danny boils the tire in reverse after them... they pull into a parking lot, cutting off a car, we pull in after them, just as the car that they cut off turns on his flashing lights... IT WAS A COP!.. they pulled into a cop station :Dou: so we park and start to get questioned, at the same time they're getting questioned as well.. we told them how the guys were *we believe* invloved in a hit an run.. the cops said that the kids claimed we and the other guys were trying to kill them were scared to death... the cops also said that they got calls about us going on the wrong side of the street amongst other things.. to make a long story shorter, they got arrested and we got off without even a ticket! :eek2: .. danny recognized the kids from when he was in highschool...

so the next day danny was hitting on some girl he knew when our "experience" came into the conversation... turn out it all started at some pizza place.. so off to the pizza place we went trying to find out what really happened.. we asked around and got a more understandable version of how it all started... turns out, the 2 guys we were chacing were getting crap beat out of them at the pizza place by the 4 guys in the other car, they ran, in the process bending their door backwards.. a few miles of back street driving with no lights on and that's were we came in... i guess they really did have a goog reason to run... at least they had a relatively safe jail cell to sleep in for the night

man i miss that skylark :ball:

I really like to hear about the boats going down the track, sounds like some good fun there. I have no idea who will win the next one. I think it all depends on the condition of the engines in the cars. Some of them get pretty tired after 30+ years. :TU:

Those GLT and GLE's are all 16 valves I believe. I know in 90 they had 153HP and the GLTs werent turbos. But the 91 740's speedo went to 140

You guys need to go to this site them scroll down to "That's it, I've had it..." and click on the "american vs Rice video" Very well done, with cars launching in time to the music and the ricers displayed with the low notes. Someone spent a lot of time syncing the action to Quincy Jones's "Soul Bosa nova" Kevin :TU:
