    Hi,

    Need some help.

I looking at a 70 GSX and was trying to determine if it was actually the correct Stage 1 engine for the car.

Between the 5th & 7th spark plugs are the letters SS, but no date code after it. I can't read anything in between the 1st & 3rd spark plugs. On the top section of the block by the firewall are the numbers 455 & 1241735.

The distributor number is: 1111962 8J12
    The intake number is: 1231718E
The carb number is: 7041242 0427
Trans has no tag on it.

The casting number makes me think it is a 72 block or can't I go by that. How else would I determine if it is the correct engine?

The cowl tag matches with the VIN in the window. It has the QQ and 188 interior, 446370H

    Thanks
    MArk

    Block # 1241735 = 1972 455
    Intake # 1231718E = 1970 455
    Carb # 7041242 = 71 455 stage 1

The block was offered from 72 to 75. It is different in casting from the 70-71. If an SS is stamped on it I would presume someone placed it there in error. This means the heads are probably different from the 70-71 style. The correct distrib. ends in 2016 as I recall.

Man, that's why I love this site. Sounds like someone is trying to pull the wool over potential buyer's eyes if he's representing this car as all original.

We have a stage 1 GSX QQ, have owed another and the dist. in this car is incorrect. It should be a 2016. The SS stamp is put in the location by a cheap die after the block is cast. Anyone can do it. So the fact that the one is there must be taken in that light. This is especially true when the rest of the deck is clean of numbers as I take his description. It is either a replacement block restamped or when it was shaved it removed all the numbers but the SS. I doubt the latter.

The page your reference is too broad and misleading. Apparently they picked out individual part numbers from various years and combined them. They do not accurately describe any individual year. Note the site describes the QQ paint as "searing" yellow and says the car has a "carburerator."

Let's cut through the numbers. Does the block have two scallops at the midpoint or one? That will determine whether it is a latter years casting without regard to numbers.

The 8J12 on the Distributor means September 12 1968 which would only be correct for a 69 Stage 1. Some very early 70's could still have used the 1111962, but most will have the 1112016 units.
Looks like someone put that car together.
BTW, wanna sell that distributor.........

I considered the carryover from 1969 but since this is a GSX it could not have been any earlier than a late Feb or early March 1970 build date ---over half way through the 70 run. If the intake is original it was cast in May 1970 at the end of the 70 model year run.

    Thanks for the expertise

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response on the numbers. You pretty much confirmed what I thought, but I wanted to be certain.

It was a beautiful car, great paint and interior! The person was selling it for a friend and didn't have much history on the car. He really didn't know for sure if it was the original engine or not. For what they were asking I wanted to be certain.($33,900.)

I already have a Stage 1 Gran Sport without the original engine.

    Your help is much appreciated!

For that price it is worth it. Considering a car with# motor is going closa to 100grand.
