    Ls 6

Kieth, don't be trying to con these Buick folks out of their anchors! How you been?
I don't want to stir up a hornet's nest but I have been around LS 6's since 1972. A close friend bought one in 72 and still has it. It has been through 4 or 5 engines and he just built and dynoed a new engine for it last year. Now don't get me wrong, it was a powerful car and a fun street car, but since I have been fooling with Buicks I think to a certain point for a street type car the Buick runs stronger for less changes. Even though they had a alimumin intake it was not too good as it was a very low profile to work with the cowl induction hood. I don't know that the stock Holley was better than the Q-jet tuned right. His car with 7" stocker tires of the time was a 13.20 car with 3.73 gears. Not bad but my 66 L79 Nova with a small block ran 13.10 completly stock with 790 miles on it 3 weeks old. I've had a couple of Buicks with relative stock engines that ran mid to low 11's and one with 9 to 1 compression. Oh, his engine made 420 on the dyno and this was with a better Comp cam than stock and a .060 over bore and fresh. Another thing his 70 car is heavier than the 68 and 67 that I ran, but I think the LS6 was a little over rated until it came time to sell as an old race car on Barrett-Jackson.

I don't know where the list was, but in buick topped the charts in the '70's as 3rd place in the top fastest muscle cars, the Stage 1 representing buick, and was placed as 3rd fastest, in front of it was a vette and shelby cobra(I think?), and both are 2 seaters. Maybe someone here can help us out and post that list here? :Do No: It isn't hard to make much power on a Stage 1 motor, I would guess that all you would have to do is port/polish or update to better heads and you already have a whole lot more power. Figure in a tuned 4 bar. carb., dual exhaust(w/ or w/out headers), the better heads, that already should make it close to 500. Ahh, what the heck, put a k&n air filter on it and that's a 5 hp increase too. Doesn't take much to make an old V8 roar to life w/ some major power numbers. :TU:

Ha! Ya got me! Perhaps you heard, I turned a big block Chevy into a boat anchor myself this year... :Dou:

I'm fine. Scott Williams is helping me put a motor together for this year. I have high expectations!

Keith I bet with Scott's help you are going to have one fast Laguna!

If you hang out here much longer you might be stepping up to Buick power. :Dou:

Hopefully see you around at NSCA races this year in BQUICK. Starting 5th year on the Stage 2....over 400 passes. Hope it hangs in there....can't have 2 cars apart....knock on wood.

I'm going to skip Atco and Cecil and hit the last five.

I can't have two cars apart at the same time, either!

    Good Reading

I always enjoy reading the good stuff here on V8Buick. I mostly am on the Pure Stockers down torwards the bottom of the website. Just to jump in and make a couple of comments to keep it interesting. Buick made a really good Stage 1 motor. They understood that to move heavy cars you needed to make it down low and I mean low. This is not to compare cars as much as it is for insite. You're probably not going to make me a Buick guy and I'm not going to make you a Chevy guy. I would like to own a GS stage 1 thou as I no doubt believe they are a really good running big block car.

I think we can all agree you can move a car 2 ways, torque and HP. Yes, the formula for torque is the measurement of twist and HP's formula is a measurement of work over time. To make high HP numbers you must make the twist work at high RPM. The LS-6 is the later in that it doesn't probably give you the ultra low bottom end of the Buick. Big rectangular ports!

I'm of the opinion that their are plenty of machine shops that are just poor. I guess I should say, their are shops that are better than others. How many shops say they can't do a Chevrolet? I went to a reputable shop that insists that you don't need a torque plate for a hone because the motor has a generous bore thickness. I disagree, as you can never have a straight enough cylinder wall when your trying to make horsepower. My point is, that unless they are put together right, they will always go slow. Needless to say, we loaded the motor up and walked out.

We did an LS-6 motor connected to a 4 speed in a 70 chevelle. The pure stock rules state you can use NHRA specs for the demensions (combustion chambers, bore, and piston volumes.) The cam to be run must be the stock stick used. We bought the GM camshaft which is made for GM by vender CRANE CAMS. The spec is 282/282 advertised and 242/242 @ .050 solid lifter cam with a .520 lift not lashed. Same cam as the 425/427's and the 375/396's form 1966. The cam is built to GM spec with the GM number. We dynoed the motor on a DTS dyno and made 481 hp and 521 lbs/ft on the torque through the manifolds and a 3 1/2ft long non mandrel exhaust pipe. The motor has a good valve job, and the compression is 11.8 to 1 (NHRA specs used). We replaced the stock 780cfm Holley with a 930cfm Holley carb shop carb on top of it for the last pull and we got 496hp and 530 lbs/ft with it running fat. We beleive we could of gotten 500hp out of it with that carb that had annular boosters with a jet change. The achillis heal in the motor is the 569 intake manifold(low rise). The flow is questionable and it absorbes a lot of heat. The car got the intake because the new Corvette hood for 70 would not except the normal high intake of the past. It's unfortunate it happened that way because the motor never made it into the Corvette in that production year. We've been out once at the 2004 Pure stock drags and ran 12.82 at 112.47 on some F70 x 14 Firestone Wide Oval tires with a 3.73 gear in it. The 60 foot times were a miserable 2.18 best. This year we will return with a 4.33 gear and a mandrel bent exhaust hoping for some 1.90's 60fts. We think a 114.5 to 115.0 mph qt mile is possible and 12.20's with a driver weighing in at 3870lbs. We've seen an automic LS-6 of Dan Jensen's run 12.30's with a 4.10 gear at the same weight at 112+ mph.

Thank you for letting me share your website and posting about my LS-6. Hope it provides some insites about another A body from General Motors.

There is no doubt that the LS6 is a great engine and I might add so is the 440 6 pack.
