Hi Guys! I must've bought this trany perhaps a hundred years ago? ou: I normally 'tag" with a note or two so I know what it came from?? But NOT this time. :blast: I looked up Muncie recyslcer site and I didnt find much info on old 'iron case tranny units" o No: So...PLEASE..PLEASE, help ID this tranny for me...TIA! :beers2: Wheelz, Tampa Bay
1972 Saginaw 3925656 is the main case number for 70-72 Sag 4 speeds while the pad VIN number 2A XXXXXXXX under the GM convention for partial VINs indicates 2 for 1972 models. Maybe a smaller horsepower engine application in a Nova or someting like that is a guess.
Jim.....DOES YOUR brain ever rest? I mean,..goodgolly dood, you must get awful headaches from all that knowledge you got crammed in twixt your ears...:TU: :Brow:  ...all kidding aside, THANQ for the info! Wheelz, Tampa Bay
How about this one? Saginaw GM1 8826866 and this looks to be a VIN 18K185259 and what appears to be a date code. This one is really hard to read B208 or 8298 or a combo of those 2 the 8 is the year. '58? '68? maybe even '78?
Definitley Saginaw,I am not aware of any Iron case Muncie 4 speed car transmissions, trucks used the iron Muncies, totally differant trans though in the pickups and trucks, but all 4 speed ones made for cars were Aluminum case that I have ever seen...I know this doesnt help but I am bored.......
I think the General thinking is the Saginaw is not as strong as the Muncie..I do not think the Saginaw was ever put behind a Big Block GM car at all...I have used the Saginaws myself behind engines under 300 HP and never had a probelem with them..I have heard guys claim they have run them behind Big Blocks with no problems but I have to wonder how hard they run them behind the Big Blocks though.....
The saginaw 4 speed I posted above is what I plan to run behind my 430. If it works it work, if it doesn't then I'll buy a Muncie. But this is a ways away.
Also, I'm pretty sure all Muncies were Aluminum. My 1970 Muncie weighs about 80 lbs and my stock 1959 Hydramatic weighs about a ton.
