Hi Guys , my 1971 GS has a green interior . I can live with the green just odd . I can tell the front buckets seats were dyed from saddle to green ions ago . Also I think it was a bench seat car originally and rear seat is an original green addition . My question is I think I’d like a black interior and is it feasible and does hold up and look correct? Any estimate of the cost and good guys to do it ? I live in upper Bucks , Pa so New Jersey guy ok too. I have the seats and rug out . I’m not ready immediately I’m thinking summer .
It's possible, but a lot of work considering removal off all the seats and door cards and then cleaning and painting the whole shebang? I am not aware of any one that would do it as a pro. You could tackle it yourself... Or you could keep the car original and fix up the interior? Legendary makes seat covers for the seats, as well as door panels.
Thanks for reply , actually the interior is in great shape except some slight wear on rear of drivers seat and I’m replacing rug anyway. I don’t want to do the dye job myself . It’s just a color issue I guess, I can live with it
Maybe Thorntons in Quakertown would have a recommendation for you. https://www.thorntonmusclecars.com/ Or any good interior shop could do it. There's one in Hatboro next to the beer distributor. I haven't dealt with them but used to buy beer down there. https://www.wnjautouph.com/
Walt tried the opplace in hatsboro no dice . He gave me a lead to another place down the road . I’ll bet it’s a messy tedious job so no one wants to do it. I’ll live with the green .
I've painted a lot of green/blue interior parts using Duplicolor black fabric paint. Even painted carpet (not in this picture). Here is a former green dash pad, blue kick panels, and steering wheel. Even painted the back seat. Seems to stand up pretty good. Does good with vinyl, but looks like crap if you paint suede.
it's not really a dye, it's a vinyl paint. Once you get it very clean, the painting goes pretty fast. As mentioned in another post, the Duplicolor folks have a good video on their site that tells you how to do it and what products to use. I used their color matching recommendation to repaint my side view mirror housing and it came out preface. Vet
Thank for the advise , but I seriously can’t do it myself . Two reasons I can’t even do a great job painting a bathroom and I ll cripple myself working in contorted position in the interior ….getting old .
I did my rear seat. It was out of the car though. I wouldn't do that job inside the car if you paid me. The key is prep. There's a whole recommended process. I think I got all my cleaning stuff from Eastwood. I think I got the SEM dye from them too IIRC. My seat was parchment color and I did it black. Still holding up and that was about 15 years ago.
Dennis, I hear you, if I get down on my knees, I need a crane to pick me up. The folks gave me this name and phone number to call when I needed interior dye. This is who they use. Kolor Korrect 732-846-1044. They are located in Central NJ. If you call them, I most likely can give you an interior shop that will dye your seats. Vet PS, hope this helps you.
Dennis, You asked, "How well does it hold up?" My 68 GS had all green interior. (I HATE green!) I painted it black over 34 years ago and it still looks GREAT!!! The car was also used as our family car. It had baby seats strapped in it, coolers laid on it, and bigger kids in it through numerous vacations. The vinyl paint holds up great in my opinion.
I sold a 1970 camaro (that I had removed and spray dyed the seats fron green to black) 20 years ago to a guy in town. Last year I talked with him about the car and restoration he did on it and he said he never touched the seats and they still look like new. I used duplicolor black
