They Say Nothing Outperforms Mobil 1? Wrong!

AMSOIL INC. set out to examine the specifics of the overly broad Nothing Outperforms... Mobil claim. AMSOIL 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil (ASL) and Mobil 1 SuperSyn 5W-30 Motor Oil were analyzed in five key bench tests measuring motor oil performance: NOACK volatility, flash/fire point, pour point, four ball wear and total base number (TBN). As shown below, AMSOIL outperformed Mobil 1 in all five areas.

    Amsoil....

Has well for me over the last 2 years in both my truck & van (approx 15,000 to 20,000 miles). I've only been changing the oil once every 9-10 months, and about ready for my 3rd change. The only hassle is buying it.... :3gears:

    amsoil

:TU: i have known of circle track racers running amsoil loosing oil pressure and fininishing their feature to later pull off the oil pan and finding either the pickup or entire pump laying in the bottom . good stuff . as for getting it . i know a couple dealers yet going to their website and ordering is the fastest( some dealers will only put in an order if they have enuff to order) , yet ive gotten the wrong order once and it then took a while to get the right oil . i especialy like their air compressor oil . ive been running it now for over 6 months . my compressor runs quieter and cooler . not to mention the air spells less oily . if been wanting to try their gear lube , but im afraid to use it in an auburn . heard not to but id asmue it would be great for open carriers and manual trans . -steve

With this being on Amsoil's website do you think the test results may be biased ? ( I think so ! )
There is a test comparing both of these two brands "back to back", done by an individual and in a running vehicle, with the samples sent to an independent lab for testing and Mobil One was the better !

I've heard that Amsoil is good.. but it's usually from one of their dealers :Do No: , it has to be very hard to beat Exxon/Mobil at their own game.

There is alot of fresh oil info over on www.realoldspower.com if you'd like to do a search. Alot depends on what you need in an oil ( as : "racing oil has a very short life, but will offer more protection under extreme loads")

  5. I was about to say the exact same thing! Not that I have a preference (I use regular oil) but an independent, unbiased review is what you really need to read.

    yeah?

To each his own I guess. I don't sell Amsoil but I use it and it is the best in my opinion and many others. It is the "First in Synthetics" regardless. Plus they are located in my state.
I used there website because if they were testing this stuff and the facts were wrong we could all sue and retire after, :) since they were false advertising there products.
However! This is not the case! So think what you like and use what you like. I just wanted some insight on what guys were using and gave my opinion and the info I had available.

I know of at least one other oil that actually outperforms Amsoil . . .

A buddy of mine has it at his shop (Pit Stop Tire and Auto). I'll try to get the name of it for everyone.

The sales rep that sold it to him had an electric motor that put strain on the oil using some sort of hand lever. You could stop the motor from turning with the amsoil in it, but not with the other stuff.

Kinda spendy, but well worth it!!!

Cool I would like to try the stuff in my lawn mower. Let us know what it is. I can see if we have any around here. My lawn mower is kind of my labratory mouse. :)

Here's one for you I read. Have the lever-guy try his test using Head & Shoulders shampoo; it will supposedly run with the best of those oils using that test. The point being that you wouldn't run H&S in your engine, and that the test isn't a good representation of what is going on in your engine.

    Food for thought...

what about Royal Purple? anyone ever do tests between the three? SUPPOSEDLY royal purple is the best and (according to them) actually allows higher HP output :Do No:

    Amsoil - first in synthetics?

I'm not sure what their basis is for saying they were first in synthetics. First to sell it for use in cars, when other oil companies were selling it for use in jets enginies for even longer? What does "first in synthetics" mean? They use it to act like they "invented" synthetic oil, which I'm pretty sure they did not. If they were the first to sell it to use in your car, that doesn't count for much in my book.

My neighbor has worked in the lubes business for over 20 years now. He has worked for a few different companies, so he's not overly biased about which company's products are "best". He's an engineer by training and he knows his stuff, inside and out. He is not going to be swayed by marketing hype and BS.

When I asked him about Amsoil, he said that there is no way that they are actually make the synthetic base oil. It is too complex and expensive of a process for a small outfit like that to actually make it. Although he does not sell it to them (his company does not), he assumes that they are buying the synthetic base oil from one of the big guys in the field and then private labeling it as theirs (with additives purchased from any number of additive suppliers). He tells me that his company manufacures some of their own additives, and buys others from other suppliers. Not everything in his synthetic oil is sourced from his own company. So it sounds like Amsoil could be doing the same thing.

I just love oil wars. There is nothing quite so emotional...

Sorry, but that's not accurate either. They and other companies have found a way around "false advertising". You see, they simply produce info that they, or someone they paid to test the oil (or whatever) in a specific way. That "way" usually shows how their product is superior than others at least in a few if not all areas. This way when challenged on their claims, they have "proof". That's all that's usually needed when brought to court. The toothpaste companies have been doing it for years now. You could compile a loooong list of companies doing this.

Me, I question how true any oil co's claim of making the best oil is. Amsoil is good and so is Mobil 1. This has been proven by independant testing so chill, people.

Religion, politics, and now.....OIL! All subjects I have strong opinions about, same as everyone else. All three cause endless arguments, and no one is ever swayed, but the arguments gone on nonetheless. I've done the same thing.....bring up a subject like this, only to realize later..... why?

I'm not picking a fight here; just throwing out some humor for all of us to share.

I've heard good things about all the oils mentioned above, but the only one of those I've actually tried (and never will again) is Pennzoil.

In my engines, I'll stick with my Castrol dino-oil. Been plenty happy with it for over twenty years now. The Buick is getting Redline in all three gearboxes.
