Intake manifold gasket installation question

    When you install a intake gasket where is it recommended that u apply that black silicone that usually comes with it?intake?water ports?

    Try setting your CLEAN & BARE intake down on top of the CLEAN heads, and LOOK very closely at the GAPS. If the intake bolt holes are all lined up with the holes in the head, you should be able to look and see how all of the machined edges fit together. At least the end seals anyways. Always use some type of sealant around the water ports, and in the four corners where the rubber end seals touch the heads. ALWAYS use a brand new gasket!! The more oil-free the surface and the better the prep, the better your chances are of NO-LEAKS!! Some people say not to use rubber end seal gaskets and just lay down a BIG, FAT BEAD of silicone instead. Me personally I like to use them, but I use VERY SMALL wipe of silicone on them. Silicone is DEFINETELY NOT recommended around the intake ports because of its incompatibility with gasoline. Use High-Tack, or Gas-ga-cinch instead. Several coats, letting dry in between. Try to use as little silicone as necessary! You REALLY DON'T WANT ANY silicone WORMS going thru or getting stuck in oil passages. I once found one inside a rod journal on a crankshaft....shortly after replacing a timing chain and using that exact color of silicone!!

    I'll give you one guess why I tore that motor

    should i just spray the high tack on both sides(head and intake)let it dry and re spray again?

    Yes, 2-3 times is more than enough, but thick enough each time that its almost to the point of dripping, and then let dry. Both sides. Hang from coat hanger and do both sides at same time.

    As long as the machine work is close to right, guaranteed not to leak around intake ports. I STILL use a THIN film of silicone around water ports and in corners of end seals, though.

    i've pulled my intake twice so far. a new valley pan, a coat of spray tack, and some rtv on the end rails and water jackets (both sides of the pan) seems to do it. no leaks, and both surfaces were far from a fresh machining. clean, but imperfect.

    go easy on the rtv, though. i've laid down what i thought was a thin bead before only to see it ooze out the side of the intake when the gasket flattened out.

    Should i spray the whole gasket or just where the ports are with High Tack?

    George, If you're using the comp gaskets like I think, just coat area around the intake ports with high tack once or twice, both sides. Dry fit the manifold with clean gasket first to get a feeling how thick to put rtv on manifold end seals. I smear a thin coat of rtv on both sides of gasket where water ports are. About 1/8th" or so round bead on the end seals.:bglasses: :grin:

    I sure did,from yesterday 4:25 pm till this morning at 5am,i dont know what "really" caused the problem.
