What kind of undercoating (if any) should there be on the outside of the inner fender? I can't imagine just a painted surface being exposed to all the road debris from the wheels. Also - any tips in getting the bottom 2 bolts off of the fenders after the "nut" on the inside has broken loose? Gotta love old rusty cars!! Bob
No undercoating in the front fenderwells. When the bottom capture nuts break loose...only 1 way to get to them...remove all other fender bolts and then remove the fender from the top of the cowl by lifting up and then pull it out....you will have to bend the fender down and use vise-grips to grab the broken square nuts....spray a lil PB Blaster on the threads and you will be set.
I used a cut off wheel. I took all 4 heads off and the washers falls off and your all set. Once the fender is off cut the cage or clip and take the broken j-nut or cage nut off and replace with new stuff. You proberly could do it with a 4" grinder too if you dont have a cut off wheel, keep it cool if you have to save the paint.

" Actually it depends on which plant built the car. If your car was built in Fremont it got nothing up front. If your car was built in Framingham or Flint it got "body schutz" sprayed in to protect the inner fenders and for noise control. Body Schutz is a type of undercoating that is very thick and harder then regular undercoating. It is also the same thing they sprayed in the rear wheelhouse areas. Duane
Thanks - I'm saving the inner fender but not the outer fender. It's filled with bondo and has a significant dent in the front. I'll see how rot free the rest of it is, I may put it on the "Pay it forward" part of the site just to get it out of my garage if anyone wants it. My car was built in Leads, MO. "K" code. It looks as if someone drove through wet cement. There is all sorts of "Coating" under the car. I'm not sure if I can even get it off or not. Would the MO plant have used any undercoating? I'm not doing a concours resoration, just a nice driver and I'd like to make it correct as possible. I already have an aftermarket rear sway bar and the 15" wheels aren't correct. Thanks everyone for your help. More to come. BH
"Would the MO plant have used any undercoating?" I don't know, I never dealt with any of the MO cars. Duane
All the Flint and Framingham cars in the boneyards up here in NE have the body Shutz. HAve to be careful on spelling that one.:Smarty:
Dave, I am giving out FREE information here, if you want my spelling to also be correct.................................then I better just keep my mouth shut.  Duane
I was cleaning the stuff off my inner fenders when I walked away I stepped in the Shutz.ou: Couldn't resist Duane
Last year, the 3 foot nozzle popped off my shutz gun while I was using it to undercoat some hard to reach places. Suddenly there was shutz everywhere! And still is, as a matter of fact. Shutz sprayed everywhere...all over me, the car, on the floors, the ceiling, the walls, my tools, the lawnmower, even the poor dog got some on him! Huge mess. And it sticks. And stays. I had to stop myself from wiping it cause the smears stick. And stay. Shutz was everywhere! I couldn't have done a better job if I had thrown it up in the air and the shutz had hit the fan. In the excitement of this sudden and total shutz storm, I dropped the shutz gun (which had an almost full container of body shutz attached to it), it landed on the cement with a resounding crack, splitting the shutz container wide open. There is a giant shutz splatter mark still on my garage floor, and a clean outline of my shoes in the middle of it.
Unfortunately, it really happened. A gallon of paint thinner and numerous rags later, there is still evidence of this shutz explosion in my garage and on my lawn equipment.
