Send it to Indy Cylinder Heads for the repair.

Your experience with home porting is a common one for those not in the business

That is standard when you are learning. At least, it was for me. That is why you see the guys who cut up a casting with a saw so they can see where the meat is. If you are going to be that aggressive on your port job, some head cross sections are mandatory.

As for victimized head, scrap it and get another. It won't be worth what you go through trying to fix it.

Oh, and the water jacket extends pretty deep into that area between the valves. Don't try to hog that area out too much. There is another downside to cutting too much of that area on factory heads too. You can disturb the engineered in "port bias". It is too much to go into in an online post, but there was a book called "How to build Horsepower" by David Vizard. He did a pretty good job at demonstrating and explaining porting theory and application. I can't remember which book or edition I had. He also has this book which I have not read:

I do admit it was a noob mistake, also it was about 2 weeks since I was in the garage porting and it seemed as if I had lost the rythm. All I can say is oops and I'm sure it won't be the last time I try this, but not anytime soon :Brow: For now I am looking for a set of heads I can gasket match and smooth the surfaces. Then send to the machine shop to be rebuilt with TA s/s valves and nice springs (thanks riley) call it a day and practice till I am comfortable throwing a set on my fresh small block. It won't be the last time I try this, but it just happens to be my first big mess up. All I can say is dang, and try again

Hey Taul, I hate to be a pain, but I don't see where you hit water. Int. or Ex. Is it just below the valve seat? I enlarged the pic, still can't see it. Help me out here man.

Yup, I've had these pic's on here about Four Years. It's a 300 Head cut in 4 places. Offered them on a loan basis. I never had any takers so I deleted them. Sure come in handy.

No prob, it was the exhaust bowl on #1 I think. It my 2nd pic up there in the posting, if you are looking down at the valve guide it is to the right of the guide and just a bit into the runner. My stone cylinder broke all the way through the metal and made about a 1/2in hole. I know the pic isnt the greatest but if you were to see it in person it would be a bit clearer. The chamber was one that was on the side of the head, and I could look into the water jacket and see the bowl itself. seemed to be less meat on the side ones.

I do remember seeing those pics before you posted, I used them as a reference when I started this catastrophe.

Figured someone would have suggested a practice set? Even if you scrap these have them flowed - you might be surprised at the result being better or worse than expected.

I've never done a set but seems to me your issue can happen to anyone. Keep going!

I agree with Shawn, Never call it quit's, you never learn anything that way. Sure, you screwed up a head, who hasn't. The One I have sectioned is the First One I tried. Tore up the valve seat while doing the short side radius. So I started on another head and have done more now rhat I know where I'm going. Keep going man!

Thanks everyone, it wont be the last head I do I can assure you that. On the bright side I now have a junk head I can learn on and see some other limits.
Jay, I feel you pain! Sriley and I were chatting that it wouldnt be grass roots unless there was a learning curve. Ill post some other pics here soon on this of "what not to do" should be fun :Brow:

One question about valves,i know that SS valves for Nailheads cost exactly the same as standard replacement,so why bother with normal valves anyway?

I know I was asking about the S/S valves earlier, just to let everyone know, I caught TA's holiday deal and ordered some. Cant wait to see them! And for anyone else who is interested in saving a few bucks they should check out the site as well.
