I'm all out of vaseline!

Is there another substance to use when rebuilding and priming the oil pump than vaseline?

I can't figure out where to get the stuff in large enough supply for this kind of application. o No:

 

I am a little confused about your post as it only take a small container of it to fill inside the oil pump gears and such.Maybe you think you fill the whole timing cover assembly?Just your regular size from the local store is all you need.....Goodluck with your project.

 

It'll only take half a jar, all you have to fill is the cavity where the gears are.

Go to the drugstore and buy a small jar if possible. Wait to do it right before skimping..

 

You need a jar for each bedroom and two for the garage. The two in the garage make for excelent assembly lube for almost everything espcally bicycles. The ones for the bedrooms are for use on the outside doorknobs to keep the kids out. Buy another jar when the first one is half gone

We don't have "jars" of it around the corner. In fact - I have no idea where to get a jar of it.

Sure, I could probably go to some porn store to get it but that kind of lube would probably look quite wierd to have in the garage (if it's even the right stuff).

Why vaseline? Does it dissolve into the oil easily? What about grease?

 

I don't know why, but the '65 service manual says specifically NOT to use grease. o No:



Isn't vaseline what you smear on your baby's butt when it's got diaper rash? Maybe you're looking in the wrong aisle in the drug store.

 

I suppose you could use vaseline for a rash as well but A) I don't have kids on my own and B) those of my friends and colleagues that have kids mention other types of salves for that.

I have built several stock motors and always used vaseline. Never had a problem either.Priming works as well but at least coat the gears in the oil pump first so they aren't dry at least.

 

I recently rebuilt my little 300 and used the vaseline but also primed it with a homemade tool also till I got good oil pressure at the gauge,I could actually feel the pressure build through the differance in the way the pump was turning after the prime took hold..............

Packing the pump aids in getting the pump primed...........right? Don't forget Vaseline is just a brand name. Your grocery store/pharmacy doesn't carry any brand of petroleum jelly? Its such a universal product, I can't imagine it being hard to find.

 

Oh Boy...I see this thread getting some amusement....Anytime you put Vaseline,packing,pumping,filling etc in a thread,its bound to go off tangent.



I agree with Andy...there has to be an off brand of Petroleum to be able to use. It not go buy 4-5 of the ones you put on your lips(Yuck),cut the top off and use them.

Go ahead and pack it... buick guys have done this for ages. I did... worked great. I packed it then primed it just before stabing the distributor an breaking in the cam. a quart over full and a bottle of EOS(and i thinkit was the non zinc variety at that -- worked fine)

As others have mentioned, vaseline is only a name brand. Ask for any kind of petroleum jelly and use that. Also, from experience don't leave the jar out in the heat while you're under the car trying to work on the oil pump and then reach for the jar and it all pours out on your head like oil. Vaseline has a low melting point I guess.p

 

I used STP Oil Treatment. No problems at all.

 

Vasoline, or assembly grease (White lube), is only required if your not going to spin the oil pump before startup, to insure that the pump will suck oil from the pan.

I don't, and have never used it pack oil pumps.

The best way is to put the pump together with oil on the gears, fill the oil filter and then spin it on, and pre-lube the motor with the tool right before you start it up.

In 40 Buick motors in the last 5 years built here, We have not had any trouble getting a oil system to prime up.
