If you post "FOR SALE"...... then sell

Not really a gripe, but more of an inconvenience and serious let down.

I had arranged to purchase a 68 skylark that had been for sale here for quite a while. Contacted the seller and made an offer on the car. The seller accepted and I happily went to my bank and sent a $1000.00 money order as a deposit and had arranged to pick the car up within a couple of weeks. I knew the condition of the car after being forwarded some pics and we agreed the car would sell as is. Everything was going well, but received a phone call one evening and hear from the seller that he wants to keep the 3 spoke steering wheel that was in the car. He tells me he doesn't need it because all of his cars have the 3 spoke wheel when we agreed on the price, but now he wants to remove it from the deal. He had told me he was tired when we negotiated the price and wasn't thinking clearly, I respond that we had an agreement and that I would like it to remain as we had discussed (especially since we had talked about the steering wheel and some other interior pieces specifically). He was a little put off, but said he could live with it, and everything will continue as planned. A few days later, I receive another call (After he had received my $1000.00 deposit, of course) and he leaves me a message to call him back. I figure he was going to tell me that one weekend would be better than another, so I call him back............. "I've decided not to sell"............ WHAT???

I believe it was his perogative not to sell, but honestly..... the car had been for sale for about 4 months, he had even relisted the sale of the car 5 days before I contacted him and made my offer. He told me that his wife didn't want him to sell the car, and that was that........Yet he listed the car as being something he had no time for and he wanted to free up some room or space (I can't remember exactly how it was put in the ad) so he could concentrate on 2 other cars.

As far as those who read this, there are no hard feelings about the loss of the deal for me. I am upset, not with the seller, but because this isn't the first time this has happened to me. I am not mentioning the seller because I believe the guy is a good guy, he always spoke nicely with me, and seemed to be a good guy. I just wanted to use this thread to say to all who are selling something.......

IF YOU ARE ADVERTISING SOMETHING FOR SALE, SELL IT! IF YOU ARE ON THE FENCE ABOUT SELLING, DON"T ADVERTISE UNTIL YOU HAVE MADE UP YOUR MIND!

thanks to all who will listen....... :beer

The purpose of a deposit is to guarantee that you will buy it and he will sell it. The deposit is supposed to protect both of you. I say it does not matter how nice someone is if they do something wrong. Because backing out after receiving a deposit is WRONG. You may have missed out on a better car because of this. The seller, to make things right, must sell you that car!

Well put Nigel. Guess some people are flaky and "using the wife says" excuse is a poor one.

I had the same happen to me only worse. Had a 65 GS Skylark bought in Montana. Guy made the deal then said his wife won"t let him sell. I was SO TICKED OFF!! A day or so later he said he talked her into selling. I sent the money order( the only payment he would take) I"m happy again, my car is coming right? WRONG He send me a email that the car has a problem and my money order is on the way back. BUMMED AGAIN! A few days later he emails the problem he thought was major turned out to be minor and I could still have it, I really wanted that car so like the first guy off the turnip truck I bought another bunch of money orders and sent him again. Guess what? A couple more days I get another message, another major problem cime up while loading it on the transfer truck and my money orders were on the way back again! Now don"t get me wrong, I was very glad to get my money back at least, but I was still out all the bother and expence of geting and sending the money orders, not to mention the ups and downs and the Bud Lites to drown my sorrows. I still think the only major problems was the little woman wearing the pants at his house!  Also lost a 65 GS in Ny that George checked out for me cause the guy there made the deal, would not let me send him a deposit and decided the night before I left to pick it up that he wanted another $500.00 :spank: Still makes me hostile to think of these numb nuts, some guys word means nothing anymore. Didn"t mean to run on so long, this is still a touchy subject to me. Mike

Wow, that is pretty rough Mike!

I know about how touchy the subject is though. I have really had to fight to keep myself from flying off the handle about the whole thing. Everytime I think about it, I get a little more PO'd, but I think in the long run I'm better off anyways. Everytime I look into my garage and start thinking how I need to find a 12 bolt, would be nice just to drop a 455 in my 'vert, need to find an extra 15" rally rim, etc, etc (stuff the car I was supposed to get had  ) I get a little red in the face. Rather than get all hot and bothered about it, I figure it'll give me some more space to concentrate on the stage 1. Good news is, the guy I bought a rust free body from in AZ hasn't backed out of that deal yet (he has been paid in full, in advance, so have the shippers........ :Dou: ).

Anyone else have any stories to tell? Feel free to chime in! I feel a little better knowing it has happened to other people.........

    A 'reverse' story....

If it had been MY wife, she probably would have sold the car herself, whether I wanted to or not. That's partly why I sent her a** packing 10 years ago. :spank:

She once bought a new car on her own, after I told her it just didn't make financial sense for us at the time (in other words, we were BROKE). I only found out about it when the salesman called to tell her it was ready to pick up....but I answered the phone 'cause she wasn't home. I still don't know how she got financing approved, but I told him to keep his car and cancel the order. I'm still surprised he did it.

A few years ago she hit a deer with her old car; bought a brand new one; quit her job; then filed bankruptcy. All within a few weeks.
    What a stupid @#$$%%^!

Geez! How did I get on THAT subject? :blast:

You guys with understanding wives should feel lucky. I've never known what it's like.

Don't mince words Nigel. Face it, call a spade a spade. You have hard feelings, you are upset....and WITH the sellerl. You have a right to be. Don't pussy-foot around it.

Whether he is a good guy or not is immaterial. I'm sure he is a good guy, but you had a deal. Doesn't that stand for anything?

i know that guy in montana!!

i "bought" a 68 GS400 from him-TWICE!! he was in washington state, another list member and vendor bought the car then decided not to go through with it-i picked up the purchase deal on this board from there-was making arrangements to fly to washington and drive the car back to socal-and he disappears!! car shows up relisted for sale, on this board, in montana 4-6 months later!! I again tried to make some kind of arrangements to purchase the car, possibly a mid way meet for delivery in vegas, ill treat him to sema-(he moved this car to montana in the middle of our 1st deal) and could NOT get the deal completed-he just went dead quiet and wouldnt respond to me. this was before the 65 deal mentioned above (i folllowed that one with some interest since i knew what had happened to me over the 68). i agree-if youre selling, sell! i hav eno idea what ever happend to that 68-he may still have it or someone may have finally been able to pry him away from it.

I feel your pain Scott. If I could have got a hold of this sorry excuse for a Buick Guy at the time it would not have been pleasant. Live and learn I guess. I have since had the Buick Gods smile on me and all is well right now. None the less it still fires me up when a deal is broken by lame excuses and lies. I still have faith that most people are honorable and stand by their word, but deals like ours make you wonder. Hang in there.....Mike
