I keep going around on which cam to use. I'm looking to get maximum power and torque out of my motor. I have 4.10 gears, and I don't mind a high stall converter. I have a 71 block that is .030 over, and I will be using '71 heads, converted to stage 1's, with a mild amount of porting. I don't mind a rough idle. In fact, I like it!
I'm looking for the most power possible with these 2 conditions: It must be able to run on pump gas for the occasional saturday drive (93 octane), and I don't want to have to rev it over 5800-6000 RPM. This IS NOT a daily driver. It can be rough around the edges.
Also, is there a piston out there with a mild dish to get me somewhere around 11:1 compression with 0 deck or .005" out of the hole? It seems like I'm stuck with either 9.8:1 or 12:1, depending on if I use a flat top or a dished type.

TA 510, good for EASY 12.20's @ 110 mph!:TU: Easily capable of quicker times, and alot more mph! (As long as the WHOLE combo is RIGHT! :Dou: :Dou:  )

Drove it on the street daily, even with power discs! :Do No:
    NO PROBLEMS, whatsoever! [IMG]

Oh yeah.... and it sounds VERY BITCHEN with headers and TA's 3" exhaust!!!!:bglasses: RADICAL idle! Got LOTS of compliments! Even from Johnny Law!! :jd:

    Thanks for the ideas...
The 290-08H is a little too mild for what I'm looking to do. I'm leaning toward the Poston GS112, and also considering the TA510, and the Poston GS110 cams. I'm looking for something that will almost rip the ground open in sound, but I also want to match the combo up well to get the most possible with the least $$$.
The 510 cam would probably be a nice match. The dynamic compression comes out to around 7.5.
I'm also thinking about having a custom cam ground to my specs.

Steve, consider getting heads flow tested before choosing cam. Much more accurate than "proven combos". Especially if they've had work!:Brow: Then call your cam supplier!

IMO, the cylinder heads should be COMPLETELY DONE (that is, on a street/strip application), before anything else is done. At least that way you KNOW what the heads flow, therefore the rest of the engine's capabilities/performance.

    For whatever its worth, :Smarty:

    Jeff,
What in your combo wasn't matched up well?
I will have 4.10 gears, 10.5:1 compression, and a converter built to the cam. I also will have a set of heads ported to flow at least 260 int. Do you think this would be a mismatch?
Thanks for the good info and suggestions.

    Sounds good so far...

Steve, sorry about taking so long to answer. I took a nice, sunny (comparatively speaking, better than home!) California vacation this week! :TU: :Brow: :pp

Mostly a lot of little things that added up negatively. A little too much gear (4.33's in a worn out 8.2 cone n'cup posi), tires small (MT 28 x 10.5), ALL stock fuel system, hypereutetic pistons and last but not least, my mis-match was the basically un-ported, pis-poorly machined Stage 1 converted Iron heads. :af: The valve job was the WORST!

    Still, almost made 11's.

..... everything has changed now, or will be anyhow.

I wish I'd had the help of this Board back then!

    In a word, NO.

As long as you TRULY have AT LEAST A MINIMUM of 10.5:1 comp. Make sure everything else is up to the level of performance of the cam. Ignition, carb, especially the fuel delivery, trans, drivetrain, ect. ect.

Sounds like you'll be OK, :TU: Best wishes [IMG]

    71GS455 Best Package Wins!

Someone on the board has a 510 for sale right now, I think. Check the parts for sale over the last couple of weeks.

    Thanks for the help.
I decided to go with the 210S cam. I think it should give me big torque and hp. Can't wait to find out!
