I have a 1995 454 suburban I intend to pull a heavy trailer with. It already has a Gale Banks header/exhaust system on it. Haven't checked for chip yet. It needs some tuning/repair that I've had no time for yet. I think that it is running well enough to say that it could probably run better. Has nice off It goes past but isn't pulling very hard at all. all done at 2500 rpm. I have been told the stock heads and cam are junk. Here is the idea: i would like to do a budget head, cam, intake swap. I need know what to start looking for as i get the money I'm not doing this immediately just gathering parts. The problem: This is apparently a bastard block, but some say can work with other gen heads. nobody wants to be specific. saw some after market heads that boast"even works on gen v blocks". they where chinese cheap if get my pointuzzled: uzzled: I see things about tall decks, short decks, oval heads, peanut heads, rectangle heads, bla, bla bla ba blaw. what kinda piece of ford is this? this is lots harder to find useful parts(not dragster motor crap) than i thought. Also need fuel pump and tbi upgrade ideas. I looked at a lot of stuff, and can do searches myself... but has anyone here been through this personally? BBB are starting to look easy:spank:
3" Kitty is still there.... that's a thought. it does have an occasional backfire @ WOT. Sounds pretty subdued when it does it. It is in a weird location. it is actually AFTER the muffleruzzled: I might see if i can get it to come off after work.
cat is off. feels alot better. But to put in perspective,I probably picked up less than a car length. Still has a wide open throttle pop (backfire). WTF?
Rob - The Gen 5 & 6 heads will swap....just can't put a Mark IV head on there. Water passage holes don't line up right. There are aftermarket heads that will fit all 3 though. Gen 5's had 4 bolt mains and I believe threaded oil cooler line holes....to name a few differences. Might have had less bolts holding the timing cover too. Serpentine pulley systems came out with these too. Gen 6's went with the hyd. roller cams. The BBC Vortec heads flow quite well....100cc's I believe. I've got a complete '93 454/7.4l engine & 4L80e tranny I'm looking to sell, should you know anyone looking.
good info... thank you not here on the motor tranny... would like to do the heads eventually when money gets better. I just need to educate myself on these first. I still have some basic things i need to do but i think will lie in the heads to really wake it up.
93 is not a roller motor, that started in 96.... 93 is a throttle body, the backfire is because it's lean, the TB needs to be serviced, check the regulator diaphragm... the TB setup actually had better low end and throttle response and best torq at 3200 rpm, the 96 and up had higher torque numbers and hp but at about 3500 rpm peak torq,,, gears are everything, it needed at least 3.73's, preferably 4.10's with a 265-75-16 tire I had a 93 with a Whipple, and a 96, and a 99..... I know what works on all 3 combo's... leave the heads and cam alone, headers are a MUST, 96 and up had 2 cat's... i'm kinda itching to get a 2007-2008 6.0 Burb w/4.10's and Whipple it...
alread has a gale banks header/exaust setup. it's wierd. they converge aat the headers into a 3" and then into the muffler, THEN into the cat. The cat is acualy a one piece deal with the tail pipe. the only ever time i have seen this, was on a 454 kodiak truck atw work. headers then short pipe, then muffler, then catr, then short turndown. must retain enough heat to go through the muffler first. is the regulator the same on the tbi454 as the tbi350? i know the throttle bodys themselves are different(bigger). i have a spare adjustable regulator here for a 350. if so i could use it for this project. I agree about the vortec heads. they do the same thing on the 350s. no low end grunt. my tbi 350 in my truck is a better puller than the vortec 350 in my other suburban. the gears in the 3/4 ton 454 suburban are 4.10s with the 13 x 3 1/2 brakes:Brow: i have been off the project while repairing a waher and dryer setou: i finally have the parts. maybe i can back on this an pull the TB tomarrow night.
I had the WOT backfire on my 89, 454, TBI in my Dually. I thought it was fuel (lean) but it turned out to be the coil. I changed the coil and it ran fine for two days then started the same thing again. I had bought a generic coil from O'Reilly's but took it back (under warranty) and got a genuine GM one, problem fixed. As your truck is a later model than mine I don't know what your coil arrangement is but mine was not the type with the coil on top of the distributor cap (HEI type) but mounted on the intake manifold. Also, these motors (TBI) do run lean and the early ones would turn the exhaust manifolds red with heat and I have been told the later model ones have thicker exhaust manifolds to help prevent this. Just my experiences.
