Hi Guys I'm New Here! I have a 87 Buick Somerset "T" Type with the dreaded 3.0 FI V6 Auto trans and Digital dash.IN REALLY NICE SHAPE.
My Trouble Started the other day I was (of course)about 100 miles from home Cruzing with not a care in the world when Suddenly... "Spit... DIE"
And it would NOT restart,I let it set about 15 min. and it Fired Right Back up, So I took off and Made it about 2 miles then Died, let it set and fired right up 2 miles Died for about 35 miles I did this. till finally I got mad and Had it towed home. Left it set over night and it started right up the next day. I thought maybe The coil pack was bad So I replaced it and the Ignition module under it... Still Does it New Plugs, wires Fuel filter,Coilpack,Module,Crank Sensor(from Junkyard)and it STILL DOES IT!!! Ran the Codes and Its Not Showing any!!! When I Purchased the Car from my aunt it had(still Does ) a Hardcore Vibration At Idol and Low Speeds But Runs Great(or did) on the open road.Any Clues? Cause I'm to the JUNK IT point! If I can't keep it running :Dou:

Sounds to me like a crank sensor.

I delt with a very similar situation with my GN. The crank sensor is 1 very important sensor in this case but you can't get any readings on it from a scan to to see if it's bad or not.

So i'd replace that 1st simply because I could (with a NEW 1) & see what happens.

not to sound oversimplistic, but have you checked the alternator? It could be the alternator's not charging the battery... and I don't think a failing alternator or battery throws a code like the sensors would. By leaving the car overnight or for a period of time, the battery builds up a static charge that allows you to crank the car again. I remember this kind of thing in my high school days when we were too broke to replace the alternator or battery. You probably want to test the battery too, if this has been going on for awhile, you battery is probably toast to. Check the simple things first.

First, dont get rid of the car, You will regret it.
Replace the crank sensor, and the fuel pump relay if it has one. then you know they both are good. and next I would do the tps. On any computer car with high milage I replace all the input sensors as a matter of routine. They wear out after so many miles. If it were my ride , I would replace all the input sensors, fuel pump relay, fuel pump and the brain box. Then I would be able to go down the road for along time.

    spit

BTW I am suspicious that the spit back you are getting is because the engine has severely leaned out. Check the fuel pressure and the wires and connections to the fuel pump. Also when was the fuel filter changed last????

Thanx Guys,Keep Helping!!! Any Ideas on the Shake When it Does Run? I was told its been doing it since it was new,and it has a one piece Harmonic balancer! But I guess I need To go one Problem At A Time.

I can't help you with the cranking / running issue, but I agree with this. I had an 86 Somerset, non t-type, with the 3.0. Loaded, white w/ red leather and digital. I ran it to 200K before it RUSTED out beyond repair. Fix this car and keep it. I'd like to have another one.

had the same problem with my 86 riviera with 3.8 litre
it ended up being BOTH the crank sensor AND the cam sensor try replacing both as they are not expensive items

it took 12 hours of idling for it to act up but car shut down 17 times in a 7 km stretch to get it to the garage

That sure does sound like the ignition module (not the coil pack)... was the new one you put in really new? If it was used, replace it. If it was new, still replace it. The parts store will exchange it for you.

Here's a really crazy idea but it comes from experience. I had a Vega come in back in about 1978 or 79, had the same kind of goofy problem. It would start and run for about 2 minutes, then just die. Let it sit for a few minutes, then it would start right up, run for about 2 minutes, then die again. It was like a dog playing fetch. It would keep this up until YOU got tired of the game. I replaced darn near everything I could think of and reach including the fuel pump. Nothing worked.

Anyway, I was standing looking at it one night about 9 or 10 PM after scratching my head all day with it. Just to be a 'good' guy, I checked the oil and it was two quarts down. Put the two quarts in it and went home. The next morning, I figured maybe I could try running it with a voltmeter hooked up and see what happened when it died again. I started it up and let it run but it never did die. I drove that stupid thing for the next half hour and it ran like a top. It should have since the entire tune was done over like new.

I got to studying a wiring diagram and turned out that the electric fuel pump was wired through the oil pressure sending unit. It also had a hot on Start wire to the fuel pump so it would start but then the power went through the pressure sensor.

Moral of the story is: Have you checked your oil? :Dou:

I had a 86 pontiac 6000..did the same thing...I replaced the Oxegen sensor and i ran fine for awhile then it did a simular stalling problem again...it sat for months...i poked at it once every so often..then one day i found a small wire that came off the + battery cable had a weak spot so i respliced it...it seemed to feed power to the brain box..vroom...it ran fine for over a year then i sold it!

    I found the Problem... Vrooooom!

    :TU: :Dou: :beer :3gears: :Brow:
I finally Solved the little "ELUSIVE" Problem With The Dying!!!
It Was NOTHING Electrical(Part wise)OR Mechanical!!!
It was a Broken Wire!!! hard to beleave 1 freakin' wire could cause this big a head ache ya know.
One of the wires just before the plug on the CRANK SENSOR was broken and i guess when it got warm it would "OPEN" the connection.I replaced the crank sensor(one more time) and noticed it when I was pulling the plug off.
ran to the local J.Y. and got a new plug free put it on and vvvvvvrrrrrrrroooooommmmm!!! off to the races,I even put the old sensor(s) back on to see for sure and sure nuff ran like a top!(new one's back on now )
Thanks for all the help in picking my brain
    Gary.
