    Thoroughly Confused

I'm compiling info on a great many axles and every time I get into the BOP realm, my head starts to hurt over the many types and variations. Maybe you guys can help me with this small part of it. Kind of an "informational aspirin!"
    Here are some questions.

    1) '70 and Earlier:

    A) When did the 9.375 axle start?

    B) In what cars was it installed? Only Buick... or?

    C) What axle spline count did it use?

    D) The pic on this thread shows what looks to be an Eaton Limited Slip, true?

    E) What diameter axle tubes did it use?

    2) '71 and Later:

    A) When did the 9.375 axle end?

    B) In what cars was it installed? I have found a 9.375 axle listed for Olds starting in '71 and as late as '81. I have what I think might be pics from a service manual, but if they are,it isn't the same axle

    C) What axle spline count did it use?

    D) What diameter axle tubes did it use?

    E) What limited slips wer used the later type? Plate? Cone?

Any other info on these two axles?

    Many Thanks!

    These are good questions!
I do not have the answers to most of your questions but I can tell you that 65 and earlier Wildcat, Electra and Riviera models were using front loaders with same size gears but different carriers than later ones.
66-70 models had 10 bolt cover, 9 3/8, 12 bolt gear, posi axles used clutch plates.
71 and later units should have 2" wider tubes as the cars had 1" wider track and 1/2" more backspacing on each wheel. I have no idea about the tubes diameter.
In the seventies some Electras and Rivieras had the smaller Pontiac 8 7/8 axle with 10 bolt cover and filler plug in the cover. My 75 Electra has a Pontiac 8 7/8" posi.
In 1976, 9 3/8 axles weren't listed in the shop manual so I think they were not available anymore in Buicks.
Le Sabres with small engines had BOP 8 1/2" rear axles.

    10 bolt 9 3/8 ?

hey guys , i never knew that early 9 3/8's had 10 bolt covers . i got this chrome cover years ago thinking and told it was for a bop 10 bolt , well its a hair bigger , it it for an early 9 3/8 ? it measure the across bolt holes just under 10 inches and from the top to bottom bolt holes around 10 inches. its new and i dont want it . i've been wanting to sell it to someone that needs it . whats it worth . ive never seen one before.thanks -steve

I gave up on gaskets for rear covers a long time ago.........they either give you the wrong one or the one you need they don't have in stock. I just poop 'em......(blue glue) :bglasses:
