I went out to start my 65 Special with a 225 that has been setting for at least a year, and probably more like a year and a half. I was expecting to jump the battery and let it charge for a while. The tires had sunk in the dirt a couple of inches and one was flat. I got in and turned the key and it cranked over! I went and got some gas and poured a little down the ol' one barrel and she lit off. Float stuck and it ran poorly at first. I fix the float and it started repeatedly. Added a little new gas as the guage was on empty. That is the good part. I pulled the oil filler cap and the rocker arms seemed dry, so I pulled the cover. There is one little drip coming out of the front of the rocker arm shaft and that is about it. The engine does have a lot of valve noise or timing chain noise. Is it normal for there to be so little oil on the rocker arms? I expected a spray when I removed the cover. This engine looks extremely clean inside and out, expecially inside. Odometer show 54,000 miles which could be correct. Any chance someone put a gasket in wrong or did something else that would starve the upper end? BTW, tranny is shot, probably towed by PO with driveshaft still in car. I am thinking about pulling the engine, removing at least the intake and front cover for inspection, and having the two speed switch-pitch rebuilt. Any input on the 225 engine and its oiling system would be appreciated. Thanks, Kurt
