I need to rebuild a 4-speed Hurst Shifter for a 69 GS. I purchased a rebuild kit from a Camaro vendor and talked to 3 others. None of them have any directions for rebuilding One said its straight forward and easy . Another vendor said take it to a rebuilder OH! by the way we rebuild them. I have not found any threads on rebuilding these and was wondering if there were any one willing to share some of there shifter secrets:shock:  or pictures. I did use advice found here and removed the Hurst handle from the body and will be sending it to the chrome shop. I look forward to using the shifter to do some of this:3gears: The shifter is currently locked up so I thought I would give it a try. I am open to suggestions and like a good challenge. Thanks Tony

When Mr Gasket sold to B and M I think the rebuild unit which was in Colorado, then in Ohio may have moved to Cal. I know another guy in Ky that does a great job plus he does the handles.

precision pontiac in Ohio...Pete Serio, THE GTO shifter guy...perfect work, all the GTO people know him, and all swear by him, even better work than Hurst factory rebuild.

I used to rebuild them myself, first one was a struggle, rest got easier. Take your time, keep it organized, they are very very simple when you take them apart, theres a couple springs, and a few roll pins that wear out. If you can find a GTO restoration guide, there is an exploded view..
honestly...if you can do simple mechanical work theres not much to them...I used to rebuild them back when there where no service parts...we'dtake 2 or 3 to make one...ah the good ole days...

Can't Hurst rebuild them? In an AMES catalog I saw an address where to send them if you need them rebuilt. I think you can just send them to Hurst

I've had a shifter rebuilt by Pete Serio (Precision Pontiac) and really trust him - he wrote a book on Hurst Shifters! I used to think sending to Hurst would be OK, but they have changed owners so many times its hard to imagine they would have a any continuity on working on them anymore.
DME is working on my shifters now, since he has/does transmissions and shifters.

OK guys your comments challenged me and there was not much of the YOU CAN DO IT!!! spirit so its a go.:Brow: I am like most men if you tell me I can't do something its like a challenge.:idea2: I got the rebuild kit listed for a Camaro Hurst Shifter Completed the dissasembly, cleaning and glass beading of all the pieces parts. I took a number of pictures:kodak: for my refrence . Time is not urgent because this car is second in line to get done so I decided To have all the parts plated I had a few other parts i wanted plated and decided to add to the pile! This may take a while so once I get them back I will take more pictures :kodak: and reassemble. Once successfull:pray:pray: : I think i might post some pictures once i figure that out. Well here are pictures of the pieces before and after. I know why most places wont give you a quote up front. there can be a lot of worn parts.

The worst of my shifter was the broke or worn out thin slider pieces. I wish I knew the correct terms but the pictures i took and notes I made came in handy a couple weeks later when all the parts came pack from plating. I cleaned and glass beaded all the parts before sending them out. I see a lot of guys just glass bead and clear them.

The Shifter handle came out nice and I am glad I had the time to get it all done.

I also met a real quality guy from Warren Ohio who rebuilds Muncie 4 speeds and is more than eager to share his knowledge with you as he goes thru it. He acctualy wants you there so he can show you every part that is questionable. He wants you to take it home the same day and likes if you assist him. He stocks all the parts new and used and is anxious to show you the difference in USA and Japan bearings. I will be happy to share his name and number if any one needs parts or a rebuild. My M21 is rebuilt and ready for the shifter. I hope this might help some one else who is not that familiar with 4speeds and shifters. Tony

Here is the name and number of a knowlegeable Muncie and Borgwarner Transmision rebuilder.:TU: He has many parts and cases available both new and used. If you want to learn a thing or two about your M21 M22 or M20 he will be happy to spend a few hours with you and rebuild that trans you depend on for your weekend fun.
