    Help,

I'm babysitting a friends 65 GTO. It has an M-21 trans. The Comp plus shifter in it was real sloppy. Like you'd hafta do the push it halfway back to first and back to the neutral gate to hit third. Soooo, I figured I'd help. I have an extra Comp plus, so I took his off and dis-assembled both shifters to swap the handle, as this was the style without the bolt on handle. His looked pretty darn ugly inside. So the new one is tight, but now it locks up. Mostly between 2nd and 3rd. I've triple checked centering it. It seemes the shifter is hitting the neutral gate before the trans pulls all the way out of second. Ditto the downshift from 3rd to 2nd. So instead of helping out, I fear I've made a mess. Now the trans ain't perfect. It'll jump outta 2nd gear. SO I guess what I'm trying to figure out is this...

    #1 A crappola shifter I installed or?
#2 The result of a tight shifter on a crappy trans?

Also, the linkage bushings feel real sloppy, but would a little slop there really keep the trans from shifting out of gear all the way? If I crawl under during a Jam, I can pull the trans the rest of the way outta gear by hand.

    Any input????? :Do No:

let me preface this by saying Im no expert on 4 speeds.

The problem could be the slop in the linkage. Linkage bushings used to come in the old Hurst Pit packs. I have a bunch in my toolbox if you want them. I would put the new bushings in and take it on another test drive :Brow: I doubt you screwed anything up in the shifter. The sloppy shifter may have been masking this problem.

Also, When your centering the shifter, are you using that special white plastic L shaped rod?

I am an expert. The car needs a new home and I've got the space. Problem solved.
