one for sale locally. sounds too good to be true, but im going to go look at it anyways. I dont know squat about chevys. How do you confirm an LS-6 any help is appreciated. Tim
This will get you started. A real build sheet A real protecto-plate An original 4 bolt main block with the VIN stamped on it. 6500 rpm red line tach Aluminum low rise intake manifold Correct # carb, if original, auto -Holley 4492, 4 spd-Holley 4557 Air conditioning not available on LS6.
I think it was black ? http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/210874/an/0/page/0/gonew/1#UNREAD
That does not look like a drag strip! Nose is up in the air too! We need to check spring rates on this car! :spank:
The picture is deceiving, the springs are the originals. uzzled: I should clarifiy that I took it out for a drive, not to the drag strip......maybe some day ???
There is only one real true way to determine an LS-6 and that is with a build sheet or original dealer documentation or Protect-O-Plate documentation . Another usual reliable way is if the engine, trans and rear are numbers matching and the date codes are within 3 weeks to a month. Some visual things to look for are The 6500 red line tach Boxed rear control arms SS package The LS6 did not come with A/C. The heavy duty front sway bar and rear sway bar SS package Round style instrument panel SS package Front turning lamps are clear instead of amber...most times no external antennas SS had a white "SS" logo in the black rubber pad on the rear bumper All of the '70-'72 SS cars came with hood pins SS came with 14" SS wheels with "SS" center caps tranny code CRV 4spd tranny code CRR auto cowl induction code is RPO ZL2...will be on build sheet That got stripe code which is RPO D88.....will be on build sheet The above 2 as well as gauges were OPTIONS and not standard however GM of canada has look up services 1-905-644-5843 Engine Pad code...contains build date...should look like this: example code T0304CRR244121 T= build facilty 0304 March 4th CRR......auto tranny LS6...would contain CRV if manual 244121....corresponds to VIN number near bottom of winshield, must match The Cowl Tag, located above wiper motor...also can verify above information and should contain "Z15"...which means 454 engine. engine parts: 3964291/2 1970 454 LS-6 head casting number 3963569 1970 454 LS-6 Intake manifold number CY is auto transmission code for LS6 and stamped on tranny. The above all have date codes as well, they cannot be after the BUILD sheet date. ORIGINAL BUILD SHEET is unfortunately the only way absolutely. All of the above can be faked and ARE FAKED quite often. If you have a $10,000 car and can turn it into a $50,000 car with a little work, some people will do it. The engine pad, cowl and even the VIN number can be faked. Any RAISED engine casting numbers are much harder to fake because they are RAISED and not stamped into the metal. Build sheet is sometimes in stuffing in rear seat, or under carpet. 3964291/2 1970 454 LS-6 Head casting number...cast Hi-Perf...same head as 396/375 Camaro located under valve cover 3963569 1970 454 LS-6 Intake manifold number..normally found on top, but some Alum manifolds number is located beneath on underside of manifold. have snowflake W cast into them. Date code closer to distributor..such as 1 5 - 8...jan 5th 1968 3963512 1970 454 LS-6 Block Casting number...found on back of block above bellhousing.date codes usually found near this cast number..suc as F1673 June,16th 1973 Engine Pad number contains CRR/CRV code and last 6 digits of VIN...found front right side of block, extending just past cylinder head. passenger side of block Both U.S. and Canada cars came with build sheets. They mostly can be found inside the seat upholstery, under the head liner or behind the back seat, under upholstery by the springs. I've even seen them found on top of the gas-tank, wedged between the tank and the floor of the car. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Almost all of the LS6 cars that you see advertised as all matching numbers are using a different but properly date coded block that has had the vin broached off and a new matching vin stamped in. If you look in Hemmings Motor News you will see that for around $2500.00 you can buy properly date coded blocks and heads and rent the proper broach and number stamps so that you too can own a total matching numbers car.
Awesome write up Gonzo. Im printing this out and will take it with me when i go. So are you saying you could get an LS6 without cowl induction? Thanks much Tim
Gonzo: I like your sig: " Buying parts I can't afford...with money I don't have...to impress people I don't like." You just went up 4 points on my good guy scale. :TU:
If you are going in dept to impress people you don't like..... Sounds like you need therapy.
Update The guy called me back last nite. As expected, non original motor (502) and tranny (th 350) and no paperwork. The guy that sold it to him "said" it was an LS-6. Hes 2 hrs away so probably wont go investigate. False alarm. Thanks for the help anyways. Happy 4th of July everyone. :TU:
Tbirdz..........Ok, no problem, hope info helps in the future. Brian, you not the first person to tell me that. :eek2:
Standard hood cars had stripes optional. Cowl hoods had stripes standard. So there were 4 combinations total. There also were 3 air cleaners available.
Good friend of mine is selling his LS6. Nice rust free car, Black/white. It does have some mods (car ran high 10's) but comes with original motor/trans ect. It is a very clean car. lemme know..can send pics He needs to sell soon
