I was wondering how to set my external regulator on my car? The service manual shows two types of regulators and mine is a little different. Is there a prefered brand to use? My battery is leaking out the top.I thought the battery was bad so I got a new battery and still it is coming out the top of the battery. The alt.,battery, wiring harness and regulator are all new on my 70 gsx.

first take voltage reading at battery cable ends, next check it on the battery post's themselves.you should NOT see any diff in voltge.in ideal conditions you want mid 14 volts .setting the voltage is a matter of tweaking the arm holding the sprig tension.problem is when you replace the cover on the reg,the operating temp. changes. this is a lost art,and better done by an experienced tech, familiar with doing it.your voltage should be between 13.8 up to 14.8 depending on load, temp, condition of 30 yr old wiring, battery & many other overlooked factors.Neihoff is one of the best on the market, that is easy to come by.if you cant find one in your area let me know.also available is an adjustable transistorized one made by TRANSPO.also be aware voltmeters differ greatly, find a buddy with a fluke w/inductive clamp capability:boring: yeah i know....BUT YOU ASKED!!!

Daryl, I had almost the same problem with my 1970 GSX.
I tried adjusting the voltage regulator(small screw the adjusts the tension on an arm inside the regulator),but I was either too high or too low on voltage.
I solved my problem by buying a new transistorized voltage regulator and swapping my original Delco-Remy cover onto it using the factory screws. No one has noticed it yet :Brow:
Voltage is always right now and batterys last a lot longer too!

Thanks for the info. The regulator on the car was putting out 18.5 volts. I put a new ac delco regulator on saturday night and the voltage was 14.5 volts. Should be ok now.

Just be sure to swap or at least keep the cover. The new Delcos are different(and you know how anal judges can be...:pp

I bought a delco from the Zone. It looks identical to the old one, except the lid is not painted. With a little gloss black spray paint, I would think it'd look the same. BTW, is is gloss black on those caps? I know that most of the stuff under the hood is satin-ish.
