You'd think it'd be as simple as remove and replace the S-spring and clutch packs, but I'm sure you'd be wrong.

How do you rebuild a GM 8.5" posi carrier? I've got new clutches and plates, a new S-spring, and shims.

A local shop will do it for $50-60, but please let's not go there... :af:

Well, I was going to rebuild mine and post the procedure and some pics, but at the last minute I found a *good* local shop and had them do it.

From my chassis manual, the way to do it is to one side at a time, you install the new clutches and the old shim (should be about .08 to .10 inch thick, iirc) with the carrier internal gears (spider and pinion gears and shaft), then using a screwdriver levered against the pinion shaft to compress the pinion gear / clutch pack, you use a dial micrometer on a solid base to measure the spider gear backlash. Too much backlash between the carrier gears means you need to add shims to that side's clutch pack.

I don't have the target backlash measurement with me, anybody with a chassis manual got it handy to post?

Once you have each side independently shimmed up, you put it all together, install the S-spring, and install it in the axle housing.

Anybody able to scan their chassis manual pictures in for this post?

  9. 3rd member bearing support removal

On the subject of rear ends... Does anybody have access to the total that is required to remove the carrier bearing supports on '63 - '65 3rd members. I can't find a local shop that is able to disassemble the 3rd member. Anybody know of any good rear end shop in the Tampa Bay area? Thanks, Sergio.
