And, another ID for the 72 stereo -- they had a purple fader control for the rear speaker while the standard radio had white. ( The color is on the housing where the 3 prongs plug into the radio ) If you use the white one on a stereo, it will not work! Probably more of them came on 72 Skylark cars than GS cars simply because there were more Skylark cars produced. I saw my 1st one ever on a 72 Skylark "brass hat" car that always came into the Buick dealership that I worked at in the early 70s. ( I even ended up with that radio 25 years ago when the car rusted out and I bought it for parts, and I still own it! ( the radio! ) And, another interesting trivia -- there were TWO different style faces on them -- one had slashes between the numbers, and the other style looked just like the standard am/fm except for the red dot in the center dial. Weird!! JKC
The first year for AM-FM stereo radios in full sized Buicks was 1966. In the first few years, they had a separate multiplexer and rear speaker amplifier that was often mounted under the dash. They also used the same two speakers as the mono radios which means that the two channels were front-rear instead of right-left. I think that A-bodied Chevrolets had the stereo option starting in 1968. I'm wondering why Buick waited so long before offering it in smaller cars?
Philippe: Same old Buick today -- 8 years after the SUV craze begins, Buick finally builds one, and now that Ford announces they are going back to focusing on automobiles again, Buick brings out SUV #2! (??????) JKC
I have a NOS in the box dealer package AM-FM Stereo for my 66 WildCat that i'm building right now:grin: Peace WildBill
A Delco employee put a bid in for all the dealer packages left over from a sealed bid acution and got them. They closed the "Proof Room" that contained 2 Dealer packages of each kind produced each year.Naturally all the "Hot" car radios got bid up and sold. His basment was stacked with homemade shelfs with 100's of NOS Buick,Olds,Pontiac,Caddilac,GMC and other makes. These ranged from the 50's to the late 70's? I bought both the 66 Buick AM/FM Stereo dealer packages he had plus several other Buick radios from him in the mid 80's. I might sell the other but it's not cheap. Can't wait to put mine in and enjoy the tunes..... Peace WildBill
Do you know if he might have one for a 67 Riviera? I already have one in my car but wouldn't mind having another one!
