    Hey Guys and Gals,

Attached is an Excel spreedsheet that I put together on the costs of building one of our beloved Buick engines. Please take a look and let me know if there is anything on this list that is out of line... GOOD or BAD. Any input that I can get on making this sheet more complete is appreciated.

    Thanks

Can I ask you a question about this. After seeing the way your car runs do you feel that it is worth the money to build this engine?

    John,

This subject has to be the most under estimated topic. I have found that most guys haven't a clue what it can really cost. Sticker shock, but as they say it does cost money to go fast. I have found cutting corners to save maybe 200 or 300 dollars can come back and bite you in the rear as your total invested engine can go south in an instant. Heads alone can run you a few thousands. I think that the first order of building a car is being realistic with yourself on how much you can afford, not what you plan on spending. Then be realistic with that amount with the build-up planned. Good work there John!

At least with what your posting it gives an actual idea to most guys what they are getting into for their goals.

Maybe some other venders/engine builders can add their own engine cost build-ups. Or even some guys out there that have completed their projects.

But one factor for all to keep in mind is the costs can climb real fast. I have always found with estimates you should always figure yourself to go over your budget. It's Murhpys Law. With my new engine I'm already over budget, but I realistically can cover it. As long as I can keep Doug Hecker away from me. He always loves to spend my money. :Brow: He's like that little devil on your shoulders that nudges you and wispers, "Go ahead, do it, pull out that card, its only money" With me he's worse than a drug pusher . But in his defense, he will have me running with the pack next Spring with all the good stuff.

After you mentioned this at Cecil I will also do the same documenting the costs of building up my engine and once I'm out I'll post it.

    Rick

    I have a simpler approach.

Take what you think it may cost. Double it. Add $1000 and there you have it, the true cost of building an engine.

I thought I could maybe lend my experience. I just got my shortblock done by Mike at TA, so I have my invoice handy. There are a couple of differences that I see, right or wrong:

Engine assembly for a girdled shortblock is $750. Mike said he gets (I think) $1250 for a complete engine assembly.

Mike machined a channel in the main bore to get oil to all 3 holes in the bearing shell - $125

Hang and align rods - $65

Fly cut pistons for valve clearance - $75

These are just the things that jumped out at me. I don't know if this typical of other Buick shops. I was more than happy with the engine I got from Mike.

I will say, though, that those Reher-Morrision ads in National Dragster are very tempting. 800 hp for $12,000. And they tell you to put 600 passes on it and then freshen it! Would be nice.

Thanks. I wish I had seen this post about 3 years ago. I may built a much "smaller" motor.

    Have fun.
