How fast can you go before you should be considering some after market axles in the 8.5 10-bolt?

when they break lol, um....idk about this one. fwiw my car weighs 3900lbs and has been running 7.0's for almost 3 years now and still no breakage on the stock 1970 axles

As soon as you put slicks on it, or sticky dot's, they will start to twist.

The more powerful the car, the faster you will break one.

Good rule of thumb is that every car faster than 12.0, that is run at the strip regularly, should have aftermarket axles.

They will usually twist before they break. I was always a low buck racer so I had to make do with a lot of wrecking yard parts. I had a friend who owned a wrecking yard just south of Tacoma Wa.. I was running a 57 Pontiac rear end in my
67 GS at the time. I would pull the axles about every third race and look for twist. If they were starting to twist I would take them back to my buddy Gordy and he would put them back on the axle rack and give me a couple new ones.
I finally went to a 64 Pontiac center section with sawed off 63 Olds wagon axles
when I put the rear end in my 64 Skylark and they lived until I retired the car in 95. So pull your axles and look for a twist. If they're straight stick them back in. It was a low 11 second car by the way.

I stepped up to 30 spline Moser Axles and Matching Eaton Posi.

NHRA requires after market axles if you run under a certain ET. Not sure what it is though. Maybe 10.99?

Run em tell they don't run anymore or till you can afford them. :)

You have bolt in axles so you should be safe for a bit. I would say mid 11 sec you should consider Aftermarket RAce axles...By the way do not do 28 spline Aftermarket cause they will cost the same as 30 spline. Do it all in one shot and be done.

Remember too. A Posi unit will only take so much torque PROBABLY LESS then the axles Be careful As speed and torque kills parts.

If your recreation once a month racer you should not have issues. Every weekend bracket class you need to spend money. Jim

NHRA says 10.99 and after market axles are required. Few cars could get into the 10s without major driveline changes. If your using a trans brake or a manual trans with drag slicks you need them now. Matter of fact youll need everything from the driveline yoke to the axles. If its a street car with a automatic and your foot braking it ,they will live for a while. Do it right and do it once . This is a area everybody goes cheap. Lots of options out there today that will take huge power.

Does anyone know who sells the correct axles for the 71 Buick rear? I see a lot of listings for the c-clip stuff, but not the Buick rears.

Also, monzaz, can I upgrade my Eaton posi from 28 spline to 30 spline by swapping the planetaries?

I agree! I spent good cash on this rear end here but it will last even with massive power from my twin turbo Buick 350! It costs less $ to do it right the first time. All it needs is the TA cover and it will be ready to go! Thanks Jim (Monzaz):TU:

Here is the info about the Moser 12 bolt Moser, just needs the TA cover and it is done:

    http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...end/index.html

    The highlights are:

    - Built for 1200 HP
    - 3" housings with 1/4 wall thickness, fully welded to the center section
    - 4 bolt retention flanges (no c clip) and you can use GM brakes
    - 33 spline Moser axles
    - 3.150 OD Ford ball bearings instead of tiny needle bearings
    - Canadian Buicks often had 12 bolts from factory so it looks correct.
    - No mods required to fit into my 70 Skylark (stock width). They also sell it in the width for your car!

All you need to do is contact Monzaz, like I did. He orders the correct 8.5 axles from Moser all the time. Jim gave me a Moser PO#, and I called Moser, referenced the P.O.#, and told them, give me a pair of these. I then ordered the 30 spline Eaton Posi from Summit. I'm not sure if you can convert the 28 spline Eaton to 30 spline. Jim could tell you.

Sounds like a plan. Thanx Larry. My car is going 11.40s now and I am considering a 150 shot to push it into the 10s. So, I guess it is time.

Yep, slicks will always work the axles hard. Stick shift or transbrake and slicks etc. ALL axle and spider gear killers.

THERE REALLY is NO SUCH thing as bullet proof engines transmissions and rear ends. ALL parts will wear out.

Everything wears and once you start to wear you need to keep up with maintenance...Just like racing... we are always checking bolts on the suspension drive line, wheels, etc. That vibration will rattle anything loose .

IT is your responsibility to keep the car fit for the work your doing.:TU:

Good luck and stay warm this winter for all the rodders in the north and for the guys in the South ... YOU Lucky boogers!!! :3gears: :)
