How Does Tire Height Affect Gear Ratio?

I know this might be kind of a newbie question, but I want to learn. How does the height of a tire affect what the final gear ratio is? I know a taller tire will effectively decrease the numerical gear ratio, but by how much? For instance, if someone had 3.42 gears in their car, and they jacked up the rear and put taller tires on, would it be like 3.23 gears? Thanks for any answers . :beers2:

A 28" tall tire is about the best way to get the true ratio out of your rear gear.
A 26" tall tire will steepen the gear & raise the overall rpms, but very minimal.

The stock tire height for our cars was about 26.6" If you divide that by the new tire height, then multiply by the rear ratio, you get the effective gear ratio. I have 3.73 gears with a 28" tire 26.6/28 X 3.73 = 3.54

awsome, always wanted to know that formula
    26.6/28 X 3.73 = 3.54

    26.6/25.16 x 2.56 = 2.70
    26.6/27.0 x 2.56 = 2.52
    26.6/28.0 x 2.56 = 2.43

    x 3.42 = 3.26
    x 3.23 = 3.08
    26.6/27.9 x 3.08 = 2.93 (got)
    26.6/27.9 x 2.73 = 2.60
    26.6/27.9 x 2.56 = 2.44

hmm.. seems like i killed my ratio on the first set when i had an mild n/a motor

2nd set either should work well on the highway with the twin turbo build and not have insane traction issues from a hole...atleast i hope
