I'm getting ready to send a '70 chrome passenger mirror off to be repaired and replated. (I'm thinking about using Paul's). How do I take it apart for repairs? Can you save the glass? :Do No:

Hold the mirror in one hand, facing yourself. With the other hand, push/rotate the top of the glass away from you. The bottom will come nearer. Inside the bottom you will see a Phillips head screw. This will release the bracket/glass. Two more screws inside you will find attach the frame to the base. Soak the screws overnight in penetrating oil first. Glass is reproduced but I've not had to replace any yet.

Bill, I've done them before and you MUST take your time!!! The cable keepers can be easily damaged. If you want sent it to me and I will get it apart for you, AL.

My bet is it's as I described earlier. Had a set of sport mirrors apart for painting last year. Seemed pretty easy to do. I was able to re-use the glass.

I'm in the same position, I think you have to cut the glass out of the non remote mirrors :Do No:

Originally they just broke them and replaced them with a new one. You can heat it with a hairdryer and gently pry it off with an AH stick once the glue gets soft.

    Bill,
I ended up breaking my glass, and pulling it apart. There is no way to take the arm apart from housing. As a result, I had to have it chromed together. The plater told me that he could not plate the arm where it goes through the housing, that the plating wouldn't take. As a result I have nickel shadowing (that's what he called it) Unavoidable, I think. You can't see it, unless you look underneath for it.
To replace the glass, I cut down a truck mirror replacement glass(convex), and glued it in with silicone. The covex glass makes the mirror much more usable.

I tried my hand at removing the mirror from the housing using a heat gun on low setting ....it cracked the mirror anyway :Dou: .
I am now faced with the issue of the screws/rivets that hold the ball pivot cover in place. Someone had replaced the mirror glass years ago and repaired the ball pivot cover with screws and basically ruined the boss that they screwed/riveted into. I want to have the mirror cup replated but i will need something that will hold up to the heat of the plating process...any ideas?
    Thanks for any help
P.S. sorry for hijacking your thread

Scott - you might talk to your plater. If they do pot metal repairs they may be able to repair the holes.
