How do I check my pump?

I just bought a 72 Skylark convertible. I replaced the pump lines and hooked up all of the wires etc. The dash was apert and I put that together. The pump does not make any noise when I try the up/down switch. There is power to the switch but it does not seem to be getting to the pump. How can I check the pump/switch?
The pump has no fluid in it yet, will it run w/o fluid? Should I fill it first?
    Thanks

You can use an ohm meter on the s/w to see if the contacts are working. Pull the /sw and close the contacts in the up or down mode and read continuity on the opposing contacts. The s/w are pretty reliable so I would bet the problem is in your wiring or motor.
You could have someone operate the s/w and with a volt meter read the volts at the motor...if you read 12v then your wiring and s/w are good. sometimes these motors just freeze up over time from non use. If you manually rotate the motor a it might start working.
    I wouldn't run the pump w/o oil.

Transmission fluid is recommended in the service manual.

I used an ohm meter on the switch and I get nothing on either side of the switch!!!! I guess that this means that my switch is bad. Where can I get one??? Does anyone have a used one for sale?
Can I use a jumper wire to see if the motor works?
    Thanks

At the risk of over-simplifying, when you ohm the s/w you put 1 lead on 1 side and the other lead on the opposite side (not above or below) and then with the leads touching the connectors operate the s/w...it should show max resistance (ohms).....just as if you touched the two testers probes together.
Secondly, you need to find where your power is. Do you have 12v in the wires going into the s/w? If not, you need to troubleshoot where the break is. Start with the fuse block, check for 12v on each side of the fuse for the top, then follow the wiring to the s/w.
If you find the problem along the way such as a bad fuse, then go all the way back to the motor and ck for 12v there when someone operates the s/w....make sure you've filled the reservoir first or you'll be putting air into the system.
