Our first 70 GSX stage 1 had a 4.78 gear set and we drove it on the street. I finally put in a set of 3.23s. That is my favorite 68- 70, 8.2 ratio. With the Buick low end torqe you do not need any more than that.

Do low gears compliment Buicks steeper cam grinds? I was told once by a cocky speed shop owner that the W-30 cam sucked unless the car had low gears. When I told him I was running 4.33's he shut up.

Drove my GS 455 for 12 years with 4.56's. Not with the same motor that whole time, but I usually changed motors playing around with dirfferent stuff. Never blew one up. Drove it from Jersey to Annapolis a couple of times, 200 miles, life in the slow lane  Eventually ran low 12's at the track and pulled real good out of the hole. Crossed the finish stripe right at about 5800 rpm. Drove it from Phoenix to Rocky Point Mexico once when I moved out west! But everyone is right, it really is a bit much if you really do anything but around town stuff. It will put some power to the ground as evidence by this 1983 picture after a day at Englishtown!
