any ideas how to pick up a 455 into a pickup from a field? i dont feel like buying an engine hoist i use cranes in the shop or a forlift
EZ Get it all loose and ready to come out and call a wrecker tow truck ... All done .:Smarty:  :TU:
if you have 4-6 strong friends with good, youthful backs, get some wooden planks and slide it up! (Disclaimer: use back supports, steel-toed shoes, helmets, safety goggles, earplugs, condoms, and even then the author takes no responsibility for your injuries) Also, many tool-rental places can rent you a hoist, so you don't have to buy one. I have also lifted engines by taking three long maple posts (about 2" dia, I think), lashing them together to make a tripod, and hanging a come-along from the center. Then, just back the truck under the tripod. -Bob Cunningham
Or better yet- use an old kindergarten swingset! http://visumod.freeshell.org/unimog/umbau.html -Bob Cunningham
One time at a salvage yard we backed the truck up to the front of an electra and rolled the motor forward and over (no core support) into the truck bed. That is after we lifter the car up with 2 bumper jacks then slid 2 tires under each front wheel...
With the heads and intake off 2 young men should lift it no problem. That's how I got my 71 455 short block. And even walked with it about 50ft. I know the older one is the faster he ran as a boy. But it's true! :beer
Not the same situation but my fiance and I were able to lift a 70 455 short block off the ground and onto an engine stand! Because she's 5'1" 105 and I'm 5'8" 160 we had to cheat. We rolled the motor back end up, bolted on the engine stand, and "flipped it" upright. It worked that time but I swore never to do that again! Slightly off topic, but it brought back memories and a dull ache in my lower back!
put some 4x4's across the opening, then chain the motor to the boards and lift at the ends with people. EASY! Dean
