Hot air leaks through!

So I need someone to drop some knowledge on me as I'm going crazy over the engine smell in my cabin! So today I took out the seats, carpet, and put down insulation and sealed up a hole in the firewall where the previous owner ran the aftermarket gauge wires through. So..... took her down the highway and no more hot air directly on my feet. Yes! But I noticed the smell started to creep in and so I reached down while driving and boom, right where the center console is forward the fire wall I was getting hot air. I know it's coming from the floor vent looking thing. So taped it up lol and drove some more and some hot air started coming in from the middle vent. How do I stop this!? Can someone explain how the heater/ac system works and where I should trace to find where this hot engine air is coming through? The a/c system is all there but does not blow cold air by the way.

What year and model are we talking about?
On AC cars the hvac controls work off of vacuum and if there is a leak or the lines are installed incorrectly it can allow air directly through the vents.
the actuator on my car had a crack and after sealing it up with epoxy it started to work fine.

You should fix the ac its not nearly as complicated as people think
