Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out the background on a TH400 tranny. Would appreciate the help from anyone out there on decoding. Here's what I have:

Passengar side - small gray tag reads:

    71- AA 81762

Driver side stamping in tranny housing reads - 610167344

    Thanks!!

I *think* 'A' would be a Chevrolet transmission.

    For the VIN 610167344

    6 - Cadillac
    1 - 1971 model year
    0 - Assembly plant - Pontiac, MI
167344 - matches serial number in VIN of original car

PS - I'm a little unsure of the assembly plant.

Chevy bellhousing pattern will not work on a Buick! I have a book on Turbo 400 transm. that has many codes I will check later.

My Turbo 400 book says that A series turbo 400's are Cadillacs? How did a Cadillac trans hook up to a Buick? I know Buick, Olds and Pontiac are interchangeable but I think Caddy and Chevy are different? That AA code was used from 65-73.

By the way the VIN stamp begins with 6 which is Cadillac!

Cadillac used a BOP bolt pattern.

    Copperheadgs1,
What Turbo 400 reference book do you have? Would you share more info about this book with us? I would like to add to my automotive library.
    Thanks,
    Ken

The book is called "Turbo 400 Hydramatic Transmissions" The author is Ron Sessions. I found it at Barnes and Nobles a few years ago but i am sure you can find it on line as well. It is very detailed abot how these transm. work and also how to rebuild and work on them. It has several pages on code listings telling what cars they were used for. T-400's were also used in Rolls Royces!
