I am looking for any information on what this transmission might have come out of or if it would be correct for a 1965 GS? The main case is stamped by the front cover WG 65 2 The main case has a yellow paint mark on the top and the yellow stenciled letters "KR" on the side The main case is cast iron, appears natural in color and has the following casting numbers: T10-1B WG DIV W-7 The front bearing collar has casting number T10A-6A The midplate and tail housing are aluminum The tail housing has a "GS" cast by the shifter plate bolt bosses The tail housing has a date code of 3-23-65 and appears to have two sets of bolt holes for a transmission mount. Typical GM A-body is attached. The tail housing cast numbers are: T10K-7 WG DIV It is a standard 10 spline input with 3 rings/grooves and a turbo 350 output. Seems like it is geared like a close ratio Muncie with a short 2.20 first gear. Thanks
I would say absolutely correct for a 65 GS. Can't verify the ratios, but the external pieces all look right. Mark
Thanks guys, I will check the ratio's this weekend and post them. Does the "GS" cast into the tail housing have any reference to Buick or is that just a coincident? I will get it cleaned up and see if anyone is interested in it on the for sale side. The inside is like brand new. Of all the four speeds I have seen and rebuilt this one is buy far the lowest mileage example I have run across. I was going to run it behind my stroker motor but would rather see it go to a restored car and run a Richmond 5 speed to handle the extra torque.
My 65 GS has the same build date. G= July, 6= 6th, 5= 1965, 2= 2nd shift. But I have a 'KT' painted on the side.....that indicates speedometer gears for a different rear end ratio. Is there a partial VIN stamped on the top of the mid plate? Is side cover aluminum or cast iron?
The only applications for that tailshaft, as far as we know, is for the 65-66 Buicks. Full size cars used it too, but not sure if pre-GS ('64 & earlier) used it. 'GS" could mean it was designed to accommodate shifter location for the GS cars, 65-up.
The side cover is cast iron The vin number on the top right front mounting ear of the main case is: 5H341884 When I get back from Byron on Sunday I will check the gear ratio's and check the number of teeth and color of the speedometer drive gear. Thanks again for the help, Mark
The speedometer gear color is brown and it has 18 teeth. The gear ratios are: 2.20, 1.65, 1.35, 1.00 Thanks
Thanks for your help Dan and everyone else. If someone needs detailed photos of anything or high resolution pictures let me know and I can email them to you. I popped over to the 65GS web site and looks like what Brian Stone posted over there is the same as this transmission. I will go ahead and post it up here for sale first before putting it up on Ebay or craigslist. Thanks Mark
